William Lawlor
William Lawlor is Professor of English and has taught at UWSP since 1978.
In the past, in addition to courses in composition and creative writing, Lawlor has taught Fundamentals of Composition, a class in basic writing that included students working on English as a Second Language. Lawlor speaks Spanish and taught for a year at Universidad Catolica Madre y Maestra in Santiago, the Dominican Republic. His translations of Caribbean poets, including the national poets of the Dominican Republic and Cuba, appear in his book Let's Go Down to the Beach (Duluth: Poetry Harbor, 1996).
Today, in addition to courses in composition, he teaches Introduction to the Study of Literature, Masters of Literature (James Baldwin and Gwendolyn Brooks), British Literature, 1660-1790 (excluding drama), and The Lives and Literature of the Beat Generation. For reference texts and encyclopedias, he has written articles and composed bibliographies on James Baldwin, Gwendolyn Brooks, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Gregory Corso, William S. Burroughs, the Beat Generation, John Locke, James Boswell, Samuel Pepys, and Alexander Pope. He is the author of The Beat Generation: A Bibliographical Teaching Guide (Metuchen, NJ: Scarecrow Press, 1998).
