Dan Dieterich

I've been teaching English at UWSP since 1976. I specialize in business writing but also teach the "Editing and Publishing" and the "Independent Writing" courses. In "Editing and Publishing" (English 349), my students write and edit articles for publication as well as forming a publishing "company" that selects a manuscript, edits it, and publishes it; they then market and sell 500 to 1000 copies of their book. In "Independent Writing" (English 157/257/357), each learner meets once a week with a peer tutor to receive personal feedback on the writing the learner has done. In "Advanced Business Writing" (English 351), students learn how to write effective letters, memos, proposals, reports, and resumes, as well as exploring the career search process. (I'm a recipient of UWSP's 1996 Excellence in Teaching Award and UWSP's 1998 Service Award.)

My credentials include a Ph.D. from the University of Illinois at Urbana/Champaign and a B.A. and M.A. from DePaul University. I keep up to date on developments in my field by reading in my field and by attending and presenting at two or more professional conventions or conferences each year. In 1998, I founded and served as Program Chair of Wisconsin's award-winning statewide conference on "The Business of Communication" for high school and college teachers of business communication. I'm also a member of the Board of Directors of the international Association for Business Communication and a past program chair for their annual convention.

My office is at the Tutoring-Learning Center in the basement of the library building on campus, so that I can supervise the peer tutors of the "Independent Writing" course. When I'm not on campus, you're likely to find me conducting Effective Business Writing training programs for a wide variety of corporate clients--some in Central Wisconsin and some elsewhere. I'm a co-founder and past president of the Association of Professional Communication Consultants. I've also received awards for my Effective Business Writing training programs from our local chapter of the American Society for Training and Development, of which I'm a past president.
