Environmental Health and Safety Committee
Resolution
To Designate UWSP a Smoke-Free Campus
Whereas: The US Environmental Protection Agency has designated environmental tobacco smoke a
Class A carcinogen, estimated exposure causes 3,000 annual lung cancer deaths and found passive
smoking has significant adverse effects on respiratory health*, and
Whereas: The UWSP community should be able to work in and enter their place of work free of
exposure to tobacco smoke, and
Whereas: Cigarette smoke outside of campus buildings is drawn in through ventilation intakes or
open doors, and
Whereas: Smoking outside of the main entrance to campus buildings does not project a
healthy image for a wellness campus, and
Whereas: Smoking remnants often badly litter campus building entrances, therefore
Be It Resolved: That the UWSP EHS Committee recommends that UWSP adopt the following policy:
- That until January 1st, 2000, the main entrances and ventilation intake locations of
all campus buildings are designated smoke-free, and
- That until January 1st, 2000, smoking near campus buildings is permitted only at
designated secondary entrances, with doors closed and away from ventilation intakes, and
- That UWSP offer assistance to staff and students who desire to quit smoking,
through cessation workshops and other supports, and
- That UWSP, and its grounds are designated completely smoke-free by January 1st, 2000.
