Resolution

To Improve the UWSP Severe Weather Warning System

Whereas: On April 24, 1997, the Environmental Health and Safety Committee sponsored a campus-wide tornado drill to evaluate the campus' ability to respond to a severe weather emergency, and

Whereas: Afterwards, Building Safety Representatives solicited feedback from the campus regarding the drill's success, and

Whereas:We found county sirens do not effectively warn our campus, and

Whereas: Email and audix are not timely or effective warning tools, and

Whereas: A multi-tiered phone tree does not communicate warning information fast enough, and

Whereas: Class bells should not be relied upon for warning, and

Whereas: Our current system does not warn staff at work off-hours or outdoors, therefore

Be It Resolved: The Environmental Health and Safety Committee requests the administration authorize the purchase and installation of an effective campus warning system, and

Be It Resolved: The Environmental Health and Safety Committee investigate and recommend shelter routes for campus buildings and a means for communicating them to occupants.
