Message from the School of Education Undergraduate Advising Office

Are you ready for the summer?
Are there things you need to be doing this summer?

What should I be doing this summer?

I know a lot of you may be thinking that once you are done with school for the semester, you can just set it all aside until the fall and take a well deserved break.

Here are some simple things you might want to be thinking about to be ready for the fall semester and stay on track with requirements:

-Read through the SOE Handbook.  I recommend doing this at the beginning and end of every semester to make sure you are not missing vital information along the way.

-Freshmen and sophomores– If you have not already done this, take the PPST this summer...you don't want to wait!  It can take 2-6 weeks to get your test results back each time you take it.  Taking it early may give you time to repeat it, if needed, and get your scores back a second time before the deadline to apply.   (about 1/4-1/3 fail at least one portion).  The computer version of this test is given all over the country by appointment, so many dates are available.  Almost all of you meet the requirement to take this test.  This information can be found in the SOE Handbook, pages 33-36.

-Juniors/Seniors – if you are completing your junior year and have not taken the Praxis II test, you should be taking it this summer.  If you are a senior, you should have already taken it.  This information, including where to find study materials, how to sign up and which test(s) to take are all in your SOE Handbook, pages 19-21.  Don't forget that you must have this test before you apply to student teach.

-Reflect on this past year and decide whether it went the way you had hoped.  If not, think about what you might change to make this next year the best it can be…

-Read the SOE Report every week…not the whole thing, but at least the bullets so you know what is going on

-Pay attention to details and deadlines

-Start off with a study routine and stick with it

          -Volunteer or work with children

-Communicate better with your teachers or advisors

-Always be prepared, whether it be for advising, school, volunteering

          -Stay balanced
-Stay in Stevens Point for the weekend more often
-Make time for friends and family

          -Exercise

-Whatever it is that makes you feel successful!

Have a great summer...see your friends and family, do the things you don't have time to do during the school year, have some fun!

Don't forget that I work all summer long, so if you need to talk or need some help, just give a call!

Maggie
