 Professional Education Program Application Information and Test Dates

 Directions and Deadlines to Apply to the Professional Education Program & Paperwork That Must Be Submitted

All requirements to apply to the Program are listed in your School of Education Handbook, pages 33-36.  Please read through the section on  applying to the Program carefully.  It includes advice on when you should be taking tests, what the tests are about, and when to apply to the Program. 

 Deadlines to Apply:  4:30 pm., February 22 and February 22

 All applications must be turned into the SOE Advising Office, 469 CPS, as soon as all requirements are met and the office has all scores. Please feel free to drop off applications prior to the deadline date.  Applications are available in the rack hanging outside of our office. 

  • All requirements must be met prior to handing in the application.
  • Applications must be accompanied by separate unofficial copies of transcripts from every college, university and technical college attended, including UWSP.  This also includes any college level credits you took in high school.
    - UWSP transcripts - you can go to MyPoint and print off "course history."
    -All other transcripts  - you can order "transfer transcripts" from the UWSP Records and Registration Office, Student Services Building, with a 3 working-day notice.  They are free of charge.  This also includes any college level credits you took in high school.
  • It is the student's responsibility to make sure UWSP has PPST scores.  You should check the upper left-hand corner of your Degree Progress Report to make sure we have received the scores (they are entered within one week of receiving them).  If they are not there, you must bring your original score report to our office so our staff can make a copy.
  • Additional materials required by major/minor departments are due to those department offices by the same deadlines. 

    NOTE:  All SECONDARY social science majors and minors (Broadfield Social Studies, Economics, Geography, History, Political Science, Psychology, Sociology) now have additional requirements to apply to the Program.  Please see the History Department for these additional requirements.
 
Speech and Hearing Screening Dates for Fall 2008 Semester - Offered September 9 and 11 Only!
All students who will have 26 credits completed by spring semester should take this test in February.

 The Speech and Hearing Screening will be conducted in the Communicative Disorders Department, Room 001 of the College of Professional Studies Building from 4:00 - 5:30 p.m. on these specific dates only:

 Pre-registration is not required.  This screening takes approximately 15 minutes and is on a first-come, first served basis.

 
 Listening Test Dates For Fall 2008 Semester - Offered September 10 and 11!                                                                                                                  
 All students who will have 26 credits completed by spring semester should take this test in February.                                                                                    

The Listening Test will be held on the dates listed below.  You must bring two writing tools and a hard surface to write on.  If you are not on time for this test, you will not be allowed to take it.  Additional paper is not allowed.

 Pre-registration is not required.  This test lasts approximately 50 minutes and is designed to check your listening comprehension skills.  (NOTE:  Students who have failed the test once or have received special permission to take it a second time must make a special appointment at least five days prior to the application deadline in Room 469 CPS.)  Special accommodations are available for students with documented disabilities or English as a Second Language consult personnel in Room 469 CPS.

 
Technology Workshop Dates For April - April Dates Available
(Starting this summer, we will be offering the workshop in August, September, January and February only!
Students who will not have Education 205 completed by the time they plan  to apply to the Professional Education Program and students who have not earned a grade of B- or better in Education 205 must complete the technology requirement to apply to the Program.  Education 205 is still required to graduate.                                                             

This workshop is for those students needing to meet the technology requirement to apply to the Professional Education Program.  Technology workshops will be given in August, September, January and February.  There is no longer a cost for the Technology Workshop is $10.00.  Students must register through the Undergraduate Advising Office at least 24 hours prior to the start of the workshop date, 715-346-2040, room 469 CPS to attend the workshop. NOTE:  If you have completed Educ 205 with a grade of "B-" or better by the application deadline, you do not need this workshop.  All students must complete Education 205 prior to student teaching.

Pre-Professional Interview - Required for All Early Childhood, Elementary, Exceptional Education and Physical Education Majors Prior to Application to the Professional Education Program - When to Take It and Directions on How to Register

Dates for June are now available - Students applying to the program this fall should have completed this interview this semester or should take it this June or the week before school starts in the fall if at all possible!

The Pre-Professional Interview is required for all students majoring in Elementary Education, Early Childhood Education, Exceptional Education and Physical Education (new for Phy Ed).  This one-on-one interview lasts approximately 30 minutes.  The fee is $30.00.  Dates and times for interviews are available at the beginning of each semester and prior to the Professional Education application deadlines.  Interviews will be available every month except for July.  You must bring $30.00 to 469 CPS to register for the interview if you are currently a UWSP student.  Students not currently registered at UWSP may call our office to register.

Dates for June are now available - Students applying to the program this fall should have completed this interview this semester or should take it this June or the week before school starts in the fall if at all possible!

Pre-Professional Skills Test:  When should I take the test?  How do I register?  Who must pass it?  What are the required scores?  Is there a waiver...(Waiver Deadlines: February 7 and September 11)?  (NOTE:  Com Dis majors are not required to take this test.)


Take this test as soon as you have completed 26 credits. 
(Call Maggie Beeber, 715-346-2040, if you have completed 26 credits, but have not yet completed or tested out of English 101/102 or 150 and
Math 100.)

The Pre-Professional Skills Test is conducted by the ETS company and scores take 4-6 weeks to be sent.  It is suggested to take the test at least 4 months prior to the School of Education application deadline, in case of the need for a retake.  Registration information sheets are available in Room 469 of the College of Professional Studies Building.  There are 2 versions of this test:  Computer and Written.

Computer Version:  Cost is $130 (all on one day)-$160 (not all on one day).  You can take the PPST on the computer by making an appointment.  Call the UWSP Testing Services Office for an appointment at 715-346-4472, located on the third floor of Delzell Hall, or see the PPST website:  www.ets.org/praxis for other test sites.  Appointments are limited.  We suggest calling 4 - 6 weeks in advance.

Required Passing Scores for the PPST are:  Reading 175, Writing 174, Math 173.

        This test is also referred to as the PRAXIS I test on the ETS web-site.

            Application information is available at the ETS web-site listed above.  There is a cost involved.  The written version of this test is only offered on certain dates and has application deadlines for each test date available at their web-site.  The computer version of this test is available by appointment only, either by phone or on-line at the ETS web-site, and many dates/times are available.  The web-site also has a list of computer based testing sites available across the state and country and the phone numbers for each.  The Stevens Point computer site is at UW-SP Testing Service, (715)346-4472. It is suggested to register at least 4 weeks prior to taking the computer version of the test.

Test Codes:

Paper Based Test - requires all three sections only offered on certain dates:

            PPST-Reading 0710 (1 hour)

            PPST-Writing           - 0720 (1 hour)

            PPST-Math 0730   (2 hours)

Computer Based Test requires all three sections offered by appointment only.  You may call a computer based testing site (list available at the ETS web-site listed above) or go on-line to register:

            Computerized PPST-Reading 5710 (1 hour)

            Computerized PPST-Writing 5720 (1 hour)

            Computerized PPST-Math 5730 (2 hours)

Take immediately after completing Math 100 and English 101 and 102 or 150.  Students usually take this test the summer after completing their freshman year.

           Students with documented disabilities or English as a Second Language may request special accommodations.  Special paperwork must be filed with the ETS company at least 2-4 months prior to taking this test.

            Results are mailed 4 to 6 weeks after the test date.

            You are only allowed to take the PPST once per calendar month if taken on the computer.

Tests At A Glance (TAAG) and other information is available on the Praxis website: www.ets.org/praxis.  Tests at a Glance are very short and should not be the only materials used to study.

WAIVERS:

Anyone who is applying to the Professional Education Program must now pass the PPST or, if criteria is met, a waiver may be requested.  If you have taken it twice and have not passed it, please refer to the waiver policy in your School of Education Handbook, pages 35 and 36.  Deadlines for Waiver Applications (applications available in the rack outside of room 469 CPS):  February 7 and September 11.  You may call Maggie Beeber to discuss this option, 715-346-2040.

How Do I Know If UWSP Received My Scores?

If we received your scores, they will show up on your Degree Progress Report within 5 working days of you receiving your scores.  If they do not show up on your DPR in that timeframe, we did not receive them, and you will need to bring your original score report to our office so that we can make a copy for our records.  Only original score reports are accepted.
