APA Style Title Page

The number 1 goes in the upper right hand corner, 1/2" down from the top of the page.

Give your paper a concise title summarizing the main idea and the issues under investigation. It should be fully explanatory when standing alone, since it is also used, in the case of a dissertation or thesis, as a statement of content for indexing purposes.

Type the title, centered between the let and right margins and positioned in the upper half of the page.  If the title is long, double-space between the lines.

By-line: the by-line has two parts -- your name and the name of the institution where the research was conducted. Type your name (upper and lower case, centered) one double-spaced line below the title. Omit the words "by" or "from the".

Type the name of the course (upper and lower, centered) one double- spaced line below your name.

Type the due date or date submitted (upper and lower, centered) one double-spaced line below the course title.

Running Head

Some professors require a running head, an abbreviated title appearing at the top of your title page. If required, type it flush left at the top of the title page in all uppercase letters. Do not exceed 50 characters. If your title is "Encouraging Reluctant Readers: Free Choice and SSR in the Elementary Classroom," your running head might be ENCOURAGING RELUCTANT READERS IN THE ELEMENTARY CLASSROOM.

Your teacher may also require a short title or manuscript header to appear on the title page and all subsequent pages. This short title consists of the first three words of your title, followed by a page number on the line below (some APA style sheets feature the page number on the same line as the short title; consult your professor.) The short title is the first thing to appear on the page, placed in the upper right corner. If you are using a word processor, have it put the abbreviated title on each page automatically.
