The
following has been devised for my graduate class, ED 703.
1. After
you have mucked around a bit in the MI Webquest and have a feel for how
details in those intelligences play out, and before you look at the
handouts I gave you and investigate SQ in more detail:
-
See
if you can come up with your own definition. What would be the traits
that distinguished a person with high SQ?
-
Looking at
your list of distinguishing characteristics and decide of there are
overlaps between elements from interpersonal, intrapersonal, or
naturalistic intelligences?
-
Now, go
to this site and take the
SQ quiz at the bottom of the page.
-
Afterward, read the descriptors provided from
both the
Mindwise site noting similarities with any of yours.
Afterward, read the descriptors provided noting similarities with
any of yours.
2. The terms
existential and spiritual tend to put people off. If this really is an
intelligence, can you think of a better term, one that might have more
meaning and less religious connotation?
3. Read
reviews of these books and see what you think, would you be intrigued
enough to order either of them or check one or both of them out of a
library?
a.
Spiritual Intelligence: What We Can Learn from the Early Awakening Child
by
Marsha Sinetar
The main
review gives and overview of the book, but also is somewhat critical of
the author and her research.
-
Do you
think that there is a lot of research on this topic? See what you
can find -- don't spend a whole lot of time doing this, just see if
you can get a flavor for what is available.
-
Why or
why not? Develop a theory as to why.
-
Can you find anything out about this author
- any credibility in her work?
b.
Spiritual Intelligence : Developing Higher
Consciousness - by
Dorothy A. Sisk,
E. Paul Torrance
( who are are these
folks? are they more credible than Sinetar?)
Read Torrance and Sisk's "Have you ever" using it as a reflection of
your own life. What is the old adage - An unexamined life is
not worth living. Socrates
Use their list as a catalyst to have a discussion with a friend, a peer,
a spouse, a child who might be old enough to understand.
-
Are we spiritual beings whose specials scripts and paths should be
honored in schools?
-
If so, how can we do that?
4. Check
out your beginning definitions and see if they match mine and those found in the
links below. Synthesize the concepts or tenets of SQ and come up with a comprehensive
definition of your own -- one that you feel pretty confident about --
what would your final one be?
