Dr. Upham is originally from New Hampshire. She became a member of the Special Education faculty of University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point in 1996.  Prior to becoming a university professor, Dr. Upham taught reading and math and was a resource room teacher (with a caseload of 55 students) in a middle school.  In addition, for two years, Dr. Upham was the lead teacher in a residential school for adjudicated boys ages 8-21. Dr. Uphams field of expertise is learning and emotional disabilities with a specialization in the emotional needs of students with learning disabled and adults with learning disabilities.

In 1997, Dr. Uphams book, Making the Grade: Reflections on Being Learning Disabled, was published by Heinemann.  The book focuses on her personally, painful years in public school.  She provides a sensitive narrative describing what it is like to be a student with a learning disability. When Dayle is asked to describe her book, she often says, I wrote my part for any young person who has a learning disability.   I wanted it to speak to those who struggle emotionally and psychologically. I wrote it in using a vocabulary and language they would understand.   The books co-author, one of Dayles college professors, adds commentary revealing Dayles coping strategies.
