Title  Creative Writing with Invented Poetry

 

Grade Level:  Jr. High                    Area of Focus:  English

 

District Aim: 

Students will develop a portfolio of various Invented Poetry writings. DPI Standard Met:  Language Arts:  C8.3, C8.4, A8.3.

Lesson: 

Students can choose whatever media they desire to create their own original poetry in each of the following areas, after modeling by the teacher.  Alphabet Poetry, Clerihew Poetry, Concrete Poetry, Definition Poetry, Headline Poetry, List Poetry, Name Poetry, Phrase Poetry, and Title-down Poetry.

Objectives:

Students will learn a variety of techniques to write poetry other than rhyming, through which they can express personal thoughts, feelings and interests.

Materials:

 

Paper, newspapers, markers, pens, computers, pen & ink, folders

 Procedures:

 Students will be shown examples, and given suggestions in developing their own poetry for each of the nine types of Invented Poetry listed under “Lesson”.  After each style of Invented Poetry is introduced, students will practice developing poems in these areas.  Students will choose their favorite poem or poems in each of the nine areas to put in their personal portfolio.  Students will share their favorite poems with their classmates.

 Evaluations: 

Students will fill out a written evaluation assessing teir like/dislike of the different forms of Invented Poetry.  Students will choose their favorite poems to display in the classroom
