"Bohr's Model"
by: Carrie Vrieze

Grade Level: Middle school
Purpose: To provide a visual and tactile model of the atomic structure.
Objectives - Students will be able to:
Create a visual picture of an element based on its atomic structure
Define proton, neutron, electron and atomic mass
Demonstrate their use and knowledge of the periodic table of elements
State Standards: D.12.2 -D.12.1-D.8.4-D.8.10-D.8.1
Intelligences Used: Visual/Spatial, Bodily/Kinesthetic, Logical/Mathematical
Materials:
Beads - 1 color for protons, 1 color for neutrons
 M&M candies for electrons.
Diagrams/Boards to create the models on
Procedure: After students have gained a basic understanding of the periodic table, they will demonstrate how to find the number of protons, neutrons, electrons, atomic mass and atomic number of various elements by creating a Bohr's model based on an element of their choice from the periodic table.
Extensions:
Students may add or remove basic parts of an atom to create new elements to demonstrate understanding of atomic structure. Students may work in pairs to create bonds between elements. Students may act out various structures for the class. Some students could orbit as electrons etc..
