Profile

Steve VanArk teaches 6th grade at Plover-Whiting Elementary School.  He received both his Master�s and Bachelor�s degree from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point in elementary education.  Steve believes in creating a community of learners in his classroom where each child�s uniqueness is celebrated.  His love of music, drama, and learning are infused throughout the school day.  He co-facilitates the Plover-Whiting Drama:Music Club, �Brioso�, which performs throughout the community.

Lesson Plans

Declaration of Independence by Steve VanArk

Students create a song or rap to explain the main sections and ideas in the declaration.  Through the song the students show they understand what the declaration means.

 

Three Branches of Government by Steve VanArk

(music) Students create a song explaining the purpose of 1 branch of government � teaching the other groups.

(interpersonal) Group work and teaching others in the class.

(movement) The groups then create a dance or movement to symbolize their branch, teach the movement to the others, remember the concepts of all 3.

(spatial) Students then create a picture representation of the 3 branches � including, checks and balances.

Using music �creation� to teach math concepts by Steve VanArk

(music) Students and myself create a song to change mixed numbers into improper fractions. �Multiply, Add, Slide� song

(movement) Students then created movements to accompany the instruction to remember the steps in this math process.
