Objectives:

Define terms of ornithology

Draw examples of each word chosen

Orally present the new terms to the class

Understand each term and its function

 Procedure:

�         Work with a partner

�         Select a Vocabulary Card

�         Research the vocabulary terms

�         Draw and color the vocabulary terms

�         Write the term on the picture

�         Present the visual vocabulary to the class

�         crown, bill, throat

�         back, rump, tail, wing

�         breast, belly, side

�         heel, ankle, toes, talons

�         contour feathers, downy feathers

�         raptor, owl pellet

�         hollow bones, keel (sternum), wishbone (clavicle)

�         air sacs, lungs, 4-chambered heart

�         crop, gizzard

�         incubate, parts of an egg

Extensions:

 Learn proper use of binoculars and go on a bird hike

Discuss bird identification, what vocabulary words on the list would make the best identification markers?

Chose a bird from a field guide and research the bird, it�s habitat and conservation status.

Invite a raptor ecologist or bird rehabilitation specialist to visit your class.
