Objectives:

Define terms of ornithology

Draw examples of each word chosen

Orally present the new terms to the class

Understand each term and its function

 Standards: F.8.2-F.8.7-F.8.6-F-8.1

 Procedure:

         Work with a partner

         Select a Vocabulary Card

         Research the vocabulary terms

         Draw and color the vocabulary terms

         Write the term on the picture

         Present the visual vocabulary to the class

Vocabulary Cards:

         crown, bill, throat

         back, rump, tail, wing

         breast, belly, side

         heel, ankle, toes, talons

         contour feathers, downy feathers

         raptor, owl pellet

         imprinting, migration

         hollow bones, keel (sternum), wishbone (clavicle)

         air sacs, lungs, 4-chambered heart

         crop, gizzard

         incubate, parts of an egg

         preening, molting

         roosting, fledging

         archaeopteryx, iguana (reptile)

  

Extensions:

 Learn proper use of binoculars and go on a bird hike

Discuss bird identification, what vocabulary words on the list would make the best identification markers?

Chose a bird from a field guide and research the bird, it�s habitat and conservation status.

Invite a raptor ecologist or bird rehabilitation specialist to visit your class.
