Steve Lybeck has taught at SPASH Alternative High School with the credit based Return Program for the past six years. He formerly taught speech at SPASH. Steve came into education through the back door (literally, he was a custodian in the Stevens Point School District prior to becoming a teacher). Steve believes instruction must be compatible with students learning styles. A multiple intelligence approach with experiential and adventure activities helps Steve and his students continue to explore learning.
Rock Climbing "People often ask me "what relevance does rock climbing or challenge course activities have with real life or school or anything besides just having fun?". Tying knots, following strict safety procedures, communicating and working as a team, and facing tough physical and mental challenges, provide opportunities to develop new and useful skills. The real benefit involves applying these skills to real life situations where the activity is mainly a metaphor to establish a reference point." "My students are risk takers. My goal is to help them find ways to minimize the dangers involved in taking the risk. Experiential activities help students utilize resources around them, follow procedures, and safely take a risk."
