Spring 2007

Block 1 is the first main experience in the UWSP curriculum for becoming a licensed K-12 teacher.  Block 1 student generally  have not had much formal coursework on teaching prior to Block 1.  If that is not true for you, you may want to discuss your particular history with one or more of the Block 1 instructors in order to have the content and requirements tailored to your special case.

1. Block 1 over-all meeting

The block meets together on Tuesdays at 2 in room 116 CPS.  At that time, all students and all instructors meet together.

2. Individual course meetings

The block is an integration of three courses:

Ed. 351 Teaching Children and Youth with Exceptional Needs in the General/Regular Classroom ( Bardon)

Ed. 381 Educational Psychology   (Shaw or Buchanan)

Instructional Resources 331 Audiovisual Media (Riggs)

Each of these three credit courses has its own meeting, in addition to the general Block 1 meeting on Tuesdays at 2.  Ed. 351 also meets on Tuesdays in the next hour after the Block 1 meeting.  IRES 331 meets in CPS 116 on Mondays at 2 and  Ed. 381 meets in the same room an hour later.

3. Discussion section meetings

For each Block 1 course, a student has a discussion meeting.  So, in addition to the Block 1 and the individual course lectures, there are smaller meetings for each discussion section.

In total then, if you are taking all three Block 1 courses, which is typical, there are a total of 7 class meetings for nine credits: the Block meeting, three course lectures and three discussion groups.

Block 1 requirements

Generally, each group will be responsible for problems or assignments that relate to both Ed. 351 and Ed. 381.

The requirements of IR 331 can be met in carrying out the group responsibilities through the use of various tools such as Dream Weaver (for web pages), PowerPoint, AppleWorks (for a newsletter or handout assignments), I-movie, Kid Pix or Inspiration. In addition, a major performance task will involve the creation of lesson plans which involve an extensive use of some of these common technologies in their execution.
