Youth in College
What is Youth in College?Youth in College (YIC) is a two-week summer enrichment program sponsored by the Stevens Point Area School District and hosted by the Network for Gifted Education which is an outreach organization at UW-Stevens Point. The program began in 1971 and is intended for students with high academic ability who have completed kindergarten through grade eight. We do not admit students who have not completed kindergarten to this two-week program. Location YIC was originally held on the UW-Stevens Point campus, but is now held at one of several area elementary schools. The 2008 session will be held at Madison Elementary School, 600 Maria Dr., Stevens Point. Dates and Times The 2008 YIC session will be held June 16 through June 27 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. (For future planning information, YIC is always held during the last two weeks of June.) Program Cost and the Role of the Stevens Point School District The cost for YIC is different for students who reside within the Stevens Point Area School District and students who do not reside within this school district. For students who reside within the Stevens Point Area School District, the cost of the program is $5.00. This is a non-refundable general course supply fee. No transportation will be provided. For students who do not reside within the Stevens Point Area School District, the cost of the program is $125.00. No transportation will be provided. Families who reside within the Stevens Point Area School District pay taxes which help fund the programs of the school district. In its commitment to providing a quality educational experience for its students, the school district has recently elected to make YIC available for a minimal cost to families. For those families who do not live within the school district and do not pay taxes to the school district, $125.00 reflects the full cost of providing this two-week program. Instructors YIC instructors are licensed teachers who have been selected for their exemplary teaching, subject matter expertise, enthusiasm, and enjoyment of teaching high academic ability students. Occasionally, an exception to licensure is made for an instructor who teaches in a specialty area for which it would be difficult to find a licensed educator. Course Structure Each class is scheduled from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon, Monday through Friday for two weeks. Students are enrolled in one class for the entire two weeks. Each class is restricted to 15 students. Student Selection The intent of YIC is to provide a fast-paced, in-depth, challenging program for high academic ability students. To ensure the program reaches the students for whom it is intended, schools are asked to forward information about potential YIC students. The application process includes a Class Preferences and Release Form as well as a School Recommendation Form. The application for younger students asks that a Skills Checklist of characteristics of high academic ability children be completed, a reading level verified, and a positive teacher recommendation be forwarded. The application for older students asks for documentation of a WKCE score (with one area in the advanced range), or a school-administered achievement test with a percentile score of 90+ on any two subtests (or other evidence of high academic ability), verification of reading level, and a positive teacher recommendation. When making admission decisions, it may become necessary to call the teacher who completed the School Recommendation Form. This call will be made by Dr. Christine Gould, the Director of the Network for Gifted Education at UW-Stevens Point. You may also contact her directly if you have questions about your child. List of Classes For the 2008 YIC session, there are a variety of classes from which to choose. Application Process Please read all application directions thoroughly.
