Retiring UWSP faculty members are often showered with gifts. But a gold watch or
plaques were not high on Nancy Page's wish list. The semester before she retired,
the HESA senior lecturer met with CPS Dean Joan North and HESA Chair Fred Hebert.
"We decided on hosting a retirement party, to which all my former athletes would be
invited," Nancy recalls. Instead of plaques, well-wishers could make contributions to
the Nancy Page HESA Scholarship. Besides teaching at the University since 1973, Nancy
coached women's field hockey from 1973-1985, women's tennis from 1986-2003 and women's
softball from 1981-1990.
At her send-off party in May 2004, "There was a tremendous outpouring of contributions," Nancy says, "from athletes and former students to friends and family members." Because of the heartwarming response to her scholarship funding request, each year a physical education major who is academically strong and community involved will be the recipient of Nancy's scholarship.
"Being a part of this University and now being able to help students financially is a very gratifying aspect of starting a scholarship" she says."They say it takes a village to raise a child. In this case, it took the commitment of many generous people to make this scholarship a reality. I want to thank everyone who contributed to my scholarship."
