Overview of history and definitions. Emphases on development, characteristics, and individual learning differences of students with gifts and talents. Identification strategies and program options in the field of gifted/talented education. Introduction to current literature as well as exploration of relevant issues and trends.

Students can take either Foundations course without being admitted to the program.

EDFOUND 782 Psychological Issues in Gifted Education(3 credits)
UW-Whitewater - Fall

This course addresses psychology and giftedness: cognitive and motivational characteristics and development of gifted children; social-emotional issues of gifted students and counseling research; and identification, diversity, assessment, and evaluation related to gifted students and gifted programs. Readings include current research and practice in working with gifted students. PREREQ: EDFOUND 781 OR EQUIVALENT EXPERIENCE; ELIGIBLE FOR GRADUATE COURSE ENROLLMENT

EDUC 792 Curriculum and Methods for Teaching Students with Gifts and Talents (3 credits)
UW-Stevens Point - Spring
 
Curriculum methods designed specifically for identified students with gifts and talents in specialized programs. Curriculum differentiation and instructional strategies/techniques for students with gifts/talents in the general education classroom. Integration of cognitive/affective domains as well as creative and critical thinking skills. Collaboration techniques. Planning of the Differentiated Program Plan. Professional and ethical teaching practice. Prereq: 791 or cons instr.

EDUC 795 Practicum in Teaching Students with Gifts and Talents
(1-3 credits)

UW Stevens Point

Observe educational programming for, plan instruction of appropriate learning experiences for, and teach students with gifts/talents using specifically designed methodologies. Program and self-evaluation. Prereq: 791 and 792 or cons instr. May take twice with cons instr.
