The School of Health, Exercise Science, and Athletics at the University of Wisconsin – Stevens Point offers a program for physical education teachers who wish to complete the Wisconsin 860 Add-on certification in Adapted Physical Education.  The program consists of a total of 12 credit hours* including coursework and practicum. Students who do not attain competency will be assigned a one credit follow-up project designed to address areas of weakness.

The program is offered to:

  • licensed physical education teachers
  • majors who will be completing the requirements for certification to teach physical education by May of 2010.

The required face-to-face graduate courses are offered alternate summers:

Advanced Assessment and Prescription in Adapted Physical Education (2 credits, face-to-face)
PEX 740
Summer 2011
Advanced Seminar in Adapted Physical Education (3 credits, face-to-face)
PEX 760
Spring 2010
Advanced Practicum and Community Connections in Adapted Physical Education (1 credit)
Distance Ed course to be completed during academic year.
PEX 400* Physical Education for Individuals with Disabilities (2 credits)
PEX 401* Physical Education for Individuals with Disabilities - Practicum (1 credit)
EDUC 351or EDUC 551* Teaching Children and Youth with Exceptional Needs in the General/Regular Classroom (3 credits)

*Most undergraduate physical education degree programs require 3 credits of adapted physical education (UWSP's PEX 400, 401) and 3 credits of intro to special needs in the regular classroom (UWSP's EDUC 351). If you have taken these courses as an undergraduate they will be applied to your add-on preparation. If you have not taken these courses they may be taken at the undergraduate level. The remaining courses are offered to licensed physical education teachers at the graduate level only.

How to Apply:

You do not need to apply to UW-Stevens Point for acceptance into this program; however, you should send a letter of intent, a copy of your current teaching license, and copies of transcripts to UWSP for evaluation to determine if any of the courses listed above could be applied to your program.
