Individual Counseling

Counseling and psychotherapy involve working with a mental health professional to resolve problems and improve life satisfaction. Counseling is an opportunity to learn more about yourself, your feelings, and your relationships with others. Students come to the Counseling Center to discuss personal concerns as well as concerns that are academic or career-related. As a result of counseling students may make decisions, develop skills, improve self-confidence, build on strengths, and identify and achieve many other goals. Some of the concerns students frequently seek help with include:

  • Alcohol/drug use
  • Anger Anxiety/worry
  • Assertiveness
  • Career choice/academic major
  • Concentration problems
  • Depressed mood
  • Eating problems
  • Family issues
  • Fears
  • Grief
  • Loneliness
  • Motivation
  • Procrastination
  • Relationships
  • Roommate problems
  • Self-Esteem/confidence
  • Sleep difficulties
  • Stress
  • Study skills
  • Time management

A very important first step in the counseling process occurs when you decide to seek help. This is the beginning of a journey to explore your thoughts, feelings and behavior and to consider new possibilities and try out different ways of doing things. This can be a rewarding time in your life as you discover things about yourself and develop a more positive sense of who you are.

The Counseling Center is staffed by professional psychologists and counselors. We offer individual brief counseling services to currently registered students free of charge. Counseling is voluntary and confidential. We hope you will call to make an appointment or seek further information when our service may be of benefit to you.
