Counseling and psychotherapy is a process where an individual seeks help from a trained professional for problems that affect their mental health. In counseling you learn about yourself, your feelings, and your relationships with others. It is an opportunity to develop new skills, enhance self-esteem, build on strengths, and identify and achieve goals. Difficulties that bring students to the Counseling Center may be personal (anxiety, worry, depression, relationships, etc.), related to their career (choosing a major, exploring options, etc.), or academic in nature (time management, study skills, test anxiety, etc.).
Common Student Concerns:
One of the most difficult steps in counseling occurs before you even see a counselor. Once you decide to seek help, the change process has begun. As you explore the way you feel, think, or behave, you will try out new ways of doing things. This can be an exciting time in your life. As you expand your limits you may be rewarded with a new perspective of who you are!
The Counseling Center also offers couples counseling, as long as both individuals are students.
The Counseling Center’s services are free of charge to students and staffed by professional psychologists. Students must voluntarily choose to visit the center in order to be assisted and it is important to know that all files are kept confidential.
