Confidentiality

Information about your counseling is kept confidential in accordance with the laws of the state of Wisconsin and the American Psychological Association ethics code.  This means the fact you have sought assistance at the Counseling Center and all information related to your care is private between you and your counselor.  Your information is not shared with anyone outside the Counseling Center without your written permission.  This includes professors and other university staff, your family members,  potential employers, military personnel and anyone else who might be seeking information about you.  There are  very few exceptions such as when  you or another person are in imminent danger or when a court of law is aware you have been in counseling here and issues a court order for information related to you.  These situations are rare, but to fully inform you we consider it important to make you aware of them.  Counselors are also required to report instances of abuse to a vulnerable other such as a child or elderly adult.  Your counselor may share information related to your treatment with other professionals within the Counseling Center in the context of supervision or consultation with the purpose of providing the most effective care for you.  We encourage you to ask your counselor about any specific concerns you may have about confidentiality or its limits.
