Women & Science Day
The girls found the day to be informative and worthwhile. When I asked what they
liked the best, they all thought the presenters in the breakout sessions were excellent.
They were most inspired by Katie Brashear, for her enthusiasm as she presented “Tales
of a Female Field Biologist.” They found her to be very brave and completely
dedicated to her craft. After listening to Ms. Brashear, I believe my students felt
they, too, could find a profession they would enjoy and dedicate themselves to.

Explore the interesting world of rehabilitation and education. Find out about
chances to hold live bald eagles, hummingbirds and trumpeter swans, as well as teaching
the public about wildlife. Meet a live educational Great Horned Owl and learn
about the programs that it is involved in.
Colloids, Cellulose and Paper Marbling
Robin S. Tanke
UWSP Associate Professor of Chemistry
Explore how dyes interact with water, foams and paper to create a beautiful marbled
postcard.
Designer Sneakers
Sue Hall
Polymer Ambassador, American Chemical Society
Join a design team and make a gym shoe for the sport of your choice. Learn
about the wonderful world of polymers and how athletic shoes help a foot strike
the ground 10,000 times a day. You'll get a "kick" out of this
activity!
The Environment: Your Impact & Responsibility
Melissa Rickert
Outreach Specialist, WI K-12 Energy Education Program (KEEP)
UWSP Wisconsin Center For Environmental Education
Join Melissa as she has you calculate your "carbon footprint" and discuss
how human actions impact the earth. You will brainstorm easy, no-cost ways
to reduce your negative impact on the earth. Find out what other students
around the state and nation are doing in their schools to make a difference.
Finally, take a pledge to lower your "carbon footprint!"
Fun with Photoshop & Images
Lisa Keller, UWSP Help Desk & Web Designer
Jessie Draper, UWSP Help Desk Manager
Students will be shown how to do a variety of tasks with Adobe Photoshop. Learn
things such as color correcting, red-eye reduction, merging images together, and
how to use filters.
Fun with Tessellations
Dr. Susan T. Talarico
UWSP Mathematics & Computing Department
This workshop will explore a beautiful connection between art and mathematics. We
will explore the art of making tessellations! The word "tessellation"
comes from the Latin word 'tessera', which means a small stone cube. These
cubes were used to make up 'tessellata' - the mosaic pictures forming floors
and tilings in Roman buildings. We will be making tessellations from pictures or
tiles, commonly in the form of animals and other life forms. We will use these forms
to cover the surface of a paper in a symmetrical way to create beautiful tessellations!
Into the Universe
Amy Wilder
UWSP Physics & Astronomy Department
Join Amy as she discusses what she had to do to write and produces this planetarium
show. In this workshop, you will be able to view our current night sky, and
take a look through the past, present and future of the NASA space program.
Learning to Think Like a Psychologist
Debbie Palmer, PhD
UWSP Assistant Professor of Psychology
Participants will learn firsthand how Psychologists use scientific methods to gain
information and knowledge about human thinking and behavior. Through
the completion of a series of hands-on activities participants will learn more,
and possibily appreciate better, their own impressive abilities and skills.
Participants will walk away with a greater understanding of what it means to think
like a Psychologist.
Magic Chemistry
Shuhua Ma
UWSP Assistant Professor of Chemistry
In this workshop, students will learn how to test the acidity of their breath, and
learn to identify various chemicals from scrambled bottles.
Mice, Ice, and Rats
Betsie Graham, “The Rat Lady”
UWSP Zoology Coordinator
We will conduct a brief metabolism experiment using live mice - comparing the metabolism
of a “warm mouse” to that of a “cold mouse.” Each group
and, if possible, each student is responsible for animal handling briefly.
Nursing Next: Nurses in Health Care Today & Tomorrow
Pamela Voyce Gedney, MSN, FNP-BC, RN, APNP

of the different types of nursing practice. Then try your hand and test your
skills at the following: Heart & Soul - Listening to the Heart and Lung
Sounds. Knee Bone's Connected to the Neck Bone - Checking Reflexes.

You Here Me Know? - Hammers, Anvils, & Drums in Your Head.
The Potato: Junk Food or Health Food?
Shelley Jansky
Research Geneticist, US Department of Agriculture

nutritional qualities. In this session,
we will learn how researchers are enhancing the nutritional quality of potatoes.
The Science Behind Ice Cream
Dr. Meredith Seiler
