If you are attending the Beginning module, you are encouraged attend the Psychopharmacology lecture on Wednesday. If you attend the Wednesday module, you are encouraged to attend the Advance Training on Thursday and Friday.

Training Module Descriptions:
Basic Pharmacology (April 14-15 and May 12-13-repeat): The preparations, routes of administration, patterns of use, and withdrawal effects of drugs of abuse and alcohol will be explained in this training. The biological actions of alcohol and tobacco, and all classes of abused drugs, will be explained. The social settings and multiple motivations to use and abuse these drugs will also be detailed.
Psychopharmacology (April 16 and May 14-repeat): The application of newly and currently marketed psychopharmacologic agents to the treatment of psychiatric disorders will be discussed. The evidence for, and the limitations of, such psychopharmacology will be examined in light of the potential therapeutic benefits of such adjuncts to patients engaged in other alcohol and other drug abuse dependency therapies.
Advanced Psychopharmacology (April 17-18 and May 15-16-repeat):
This workshop is designed to help participants with solid knowledge of psychopharmacology understand the actions of drugs on neurotransmitters and the psychological impact on the individual. Drug treatment for dual diagnosis patients will be explained. The common side effects and must know adverse drug reactions will be discussed. Interactions of psychiatric medications with drugs of abuse will be explained. Adherence to, and safe use of, medications will be discussed.
About the Presenter:
E. Don Nelson, Pharm.D., Professor of Clinical Pharmacology Emeritus, University of Cincinnati.
Dr. Nelson is Emeritus Professor of Clinical Pharmacology and Cell Biophysics in the Department of Pharmacology and Cell Biophysics at the University Of Cincinnati College Of Medicine. Dr. Nelson received his Doctorate of Pharmacology at the University of California Medical Center, San Francisco. He has served as a NIDA/NIAAA Fellow – Career Teacher in the Addictions since 1977.
He has served as Associate Director, Drug & Poison Information Center, since 1972 and has been a faculty member at the University of Cincinnati Psychiatry and Law Institute since 1997. Dr Nelson served on the faulty at University of California-San Francisco and the University of Minnesota-Minneapolis. He has been principal or co-investigator on numerous research studies and clinical trials, and has written numerous articles on topics related to psychopharmacology. Dr. Nelson has won numerous awards, including Who's Who in Science and Engineering from Marquis Publications, in 1996.
