Christy Brazee teaching a classCommunication is a very popular major, and we are committed to keeping our standards high so that our graduates will be recognized for their strong skills and knowledge. If you are interested in becoming a Communication major, you should first go to the Communication office (CAC 225) to make an appointment to meet with the Undergraduate Advising Coordinator (UAC). The UAC will discuss your options in the major and assign you an advisor. At that point, you will be a Communication Premajor, and you should start working to complete our Premajor requirements

  1. Successfully complete Pre-major requirements; complete the Application to the Communication Major, be admitted to the Major.

  2. Complete 40 credits in Communication including:
    • Communication 100, Introduction to Communication (1 credit, pass/fail)
    • Communication Core (12 credits)
      • Communication 171, Communication in Civilization
      • Communication 271, Contemporary Communication Theories
      • Communication 273, Reasoning and Criticism
      • Communication 373 Communication and Social Change
    • Complete requirements in one Communication emphasis area (21 credits)
      • Media Studies Emphasis
      • Interpersonal/Organizational Emphasis
      • Public Relations Emphasis
      • Individually Planned Communication Emphasis
  3. At least 18 credits of Communication courses must be numbered 300 or above.
  4. Communication 101, Public Speaking, may not be used to complete the major.
