Welcome to the Division of Communication!
The mission of the Division of Communication at the University of Wisconsin – Stevens Point (UWSP) is to foster leadership and engagement to prepare students to meet the communication challenges of tomorrow. By continuing our tradition as an innovative and comprehensive communication program, we will inspire our communities to use the power of communication for positive change in the world.
We are proud to provide outstanding educational opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students. The Division offers a comprehensive major. Our students select from emphasis areas in interpersonal and organizational communication, media studies and public relations. Our major and minor will prepare students for careers in journalism, public relations, human services, training, sales and the media.
The Division of Communication values:
- Creativity, discovery, intellectual curiosity, and lifelong learning for students and faculty;
- Education based in the liberal arts and sciences that prepares students to be global citizens;
- Critical evaluation of information; and
- Ethical application of communication skills and technologies.
Four thousand students have graduated with a communication major from UWSP. Many UWSP alumni have achieved great success and hold important leadership roles in their professions and communities.
We encourage all of our students to test and practice the theories, skills and ideas they learn in class by participating in real-world experiences via our student organizations. Students develop their media expertise through The Pointer, our university’s weekly newspaper, WWSP-90FM, our 30,000 watt student radio station, and SPTV – Student Television, which telecasts programming throughout the Stevens Point area on Cable Channel 98. Public relations students participate in PR campaigns and network with professionals in our chapter of the Public Relations Student Society of America.
We strongly recommend that our students develop their skills through internship and externship opportunities. Our London externship has become a very popular culminating experience for many seniors.
