The mission of the Division of Communication at the University of Wisconsin – Stevens Point (UWSP) is to foster leadership and engagement to prepare students to meet the communication challenges of tomorrow. By continuing our tradition as an innovative program, we will inspire our communities to use the power of communication for positive change in the world.

The Division of Communication values

  • Creativity, discovery, intellectual curiosity, and lifelong learning for students and faculty;
  • Education based in the liberal arts and sciences that prepares students to be global citizens;
  • Critical evaluation of information; and
  • Ethical application of communication skills and technologies.
We are proud to provide outstanding educational opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students. The Division offers a comprehensive Communication major and minor. Majors select from three emphasis areas: interpersonal and organizational communication, media studies, or public relations. Communication majors and minors, as well as students in our graduate program, are prepared for careers in a variety of fields, including journalism, public relations, health and human services, corporate training, sales, and media production. The Division also offers an undergraduate major in Arts Management, which combines skills in public relations and business with knowledge and experience in the fine and performing arts to prepare students to work in performing arts centers, museums, galleries, studios, and multinational entertainment companies.

Many Communication and Arts Management alumni have achieved great success and hold important leadership roles in their professions and communities. Through events such as Communication Week, alumni are able to return to campus to provide guidance and inspiration for our current students.

We encourage all students to test and practice the theories, skills, and ideas they learn in class by taking participating in our excellent student organizations. Students can develop outstanding media skills at  The Pointer, our weekly student newspaper, WWSP-90FM, our 30,000-watt student radio station, and SPTV, our student television station which broadcasts throughout the area on cable channel 98. Participating in our chapter of the Public Relations Student Society of America, students conduct PR campaigns and network with professionals around the state and at the national level. We encourage students to explore not only the co-curricular opportunities we offer, but also others at UWSP.

We have a strong history of success with our internship and externship program. Whether required or elective, these offer students additional opportunities to develop and practice their skills for the working world.

Students can take advantage of several opportunities for foreign travel in the Division. Our externship in London is an excellent culminating experience for seniors. In addition, we offer a Culinary Journalism course in Greece each summer and a Communication and Culture course in Australia each winter.
