​Ichtyhyology and Aquarium Science Society of Stevens Point (IASSSP)

IASSSP offers opportunities to club members and the general public to gain experience and knowledge in ichthyological and aquarium methods and techniques including field experience through surveying trips, research experience through projects with preserved specimens, and aquarium maintenance experience through working with live fishes. For more information and pictures of the live fish lab, look at their SPIN page.

Meetings are held every Monday at 5 p.m. in TNR 400.

​Did you know?

Wisconsin boasts 159 fish species (145 are native). Portage County is home to nearly 80 species of fish. Less than one quarter of these species (19) are considered game fishes—those with a harvest season, minimum size limit or daily bag limit. The remaining species comprise a dazzling array of mainly minnows, suckers catfishes and  darters (small, charismatic perches).

Collection Overview

The Museum's Ichthyology Collection is one of the two largest fish collections in the state. The collection currently contains specimens from roughly 3,000 of the 30,000+ recognized fish species, the majority of which were collected by UWSP students over the past 120 years. While many of the specimens are native to Wisconsin, the collection also contains specimens from around the world.
