Description: 50 Favorites - 36. On April 14, 1865, just six days after the surrender of Confederate general Robert E. Lee the General Grant at Appomattox, President Abraham Lincoln was assassinated at Ford's Theater in Washington by southern patriot and actor, John Wilkes Booth. Although Lincoln's popularity as a war-time president had not been strong and his election to a second term the previous November was determined by fewer than 500,000 votes, the national outpouring of grief that followed this first assassination of the United States president was tremendous. Swags of black drapery, hung in cities and towns across the Union, expressed the nations sorrow. (50 Favorites catalogue) U1, p.277; M1, p. 12
