Three Training Workshops Were Held For Teachers Who Would Develop And Use Educational Materials. Eighteen Teachers From Public And Private Schools Participated In Development Of A Brochure And Packet Of Materials. These Were Then Distributed Or Presented To A Wide Variety Of Community Groups. An Environmental Survey Was Also Conducted, And Attempts Are Current Under Way To Pass A County-wide Solid Waste Management Ordinance. Year: 1990WEEB Grant: $7,650 Contribution: $7,330 Title: Bluebirds And Aluminum Cans Org: Rice Lake Area Schools Grant: 1-4802-EE Contact: Robert Foster Addr1: 700 Augusta Street Addr2: Rice Lake WI 54868- Phone: 715-234-2181 Synopsis: This Project Produced Over 800 Bluebird Houses And 600 Wooden C Crushers That Were Sold. The Money Was Donated To The Humane Society. This Project Involved Extensive Coordination And Division Of Labor Within The School And Produced An Excellent Cooperative Effort With Industry In The Community. The Project Generated A Profit Which Will Allow It To Become Self-perpetuating, And A New Project Has Been Undertaken To Build Recycling Collection Boxes Around The Area Next Year. This Is A Model Project Of Interdisciplinary Activity Within The Schools. Year: 1990WEEB Grant: $6,500 Contribution: $5,200 Title: Citizen Identification And Priority Org: Town Of Mt. Sixty-three People Participated In One Of Five Focus Group Workshops And A Similar Workshop Was Held With 25 Representatives Of The 4th And 5th Grade Student Councils Of A School. This Generated At List Of 333 Environmental Concerns, Which Were Further Reduced To The Top Ten Concerns. Ballots Were Then Mailed To 7000 Residents Asking For Ranking Of Top Ten Concern Areas. Four Hundred And Seventy Ballots Were Returned. The Rank Order Of Concern From High To Low Were: Water Supply, Recycling, Waste Disposal, Air Supply, health And Safety, And Shelter. The Museum Naturalist Is Working To Complete The Kits, Which Have Been Widely Used. A Substantial Amount Of Resource Material Has Been Developed. It Is A Continuing Program (10 Years Or So). They Have Especially Reached Tourists And Second Home Owners. All Visitors To The Museum (6000 Yr.) See The Program Materials And It Is Promoted In Our Newsletter (reaching 600 Households) 6x Each Year. One Patron Who Was Impressed With The Quality Of The Kits Wrote An Article About Them For The Newsletter. This Inventory Was Designed To Facilitate Networking Among Schools And Other Agencies By Surveying The Type Of Natural Areas And The Extent Of Restoration. Of The 2,661 Public And Private Schools Which Were Sent Surveys, About 45% Responded. The Data Has Been Put Into A Dbase Iii Computer Format The University. The Survey Has Generated Requests From Schools To Network With Other Schools, However Funds Are Not Available To Provide This Service Directly From The UW Arboretum. The Grant Allowed Employment Of A Full-time Environmental Staff Person For The Summer Resident Camp, Camp Nawakwa. The Staff Person Trained Adult Leaders In A Variety Of Hands-on Environmental Activities. Nine Community Day Camps Throughout Northern Wisconsin Used This Specialist To Conduct Nature Appreciation Activities, And Adults Were Given Instructional Resource Kits To Assist With Future Training. Over 900 Girls And 250 Adults Received Training Under This Grant. The Volunteers Who Had Little Public Speaking Experience Were Trained In These Skills By Others Who Were Experienced. A Brochure Was Developed And Distributed To Local Groups Such As Scouts, 4-h, Senior Citizen's Groups And Others. As Of 12/22/93 Several New Programs And Speakers Were Added. In 1992 61 Presentations Were Given In The Chippewa Valley As Far North As Ladysmith, south To Arcadia And From Menomonie To Neilsville. The First Was EE Teaching Strategies, And The Second Was The Ecological Basis For EE. One Course Was Offered Twice, Service 13 Public Schools And 2 Private Schools. Thirty Teachers Received Training. Other Courses Are Being Planned By The 18 Out-reach Instructors Who Were Trained Under The Grant. WI 54407- Phone: 715-346-2028 Synopsis: On April 30-may 1, 1990, Twenty Persons Attended A Planning Session At The Central Wisconsin Environmental Station. This Group Developed An Outline And Held Additional Conference Planning Sessions At Stevens Point And Milwaukee. The Purpose Of The Conferences Is To Heighten Awareness And Stimulate Action Toward Environmental Issues Among High School Students And Teachers Throughout Wisconsin. Speakers And Exhibitors Have Been Contacted For Both Conferences, And Flyers Have Been Completed And Distributed. Approximately 200 Participants Had Registered By Mid-October For Milwaukee, But Numbers Were Not Available For Stevens Point. A Well-documented Summary Of The Project Steps And Time-table Was Prepared For Others Interested In Promoting This Type Of Event. Attendance At The Weekend Was About 6,000 People, Representing 27 States And 6 Foreign Countries. the Project Is Continuing And Growing Each Year. In 1992 Attendance Was 7500 At The June Fair. Session Were Help Once A Month, At A Site In Each Of Wisconsin's Geographic Provinces, To Develop A Knowledge Of Selected Environmental Issues Within The State. The Sessions Covered Wisconsin Geology, Mining, Woodlands, Volcanic And Earthquake Activity And Field Trips To Various Locations Around The State. Each Session Was Taught By Specialists In The Subject Area. The Project Continued Into The 1992 Spring/summer. These Modules Were Designed For Use Both At Hixon Forest Nature Center As Well As In Classrooms, And Are Available For Nominal Cost ($1-$2). A Model Of How To Design Curriculum With Teacher Was Also Developed. Teachers Then Involved Classes In Cooperative Projects Such As Investigation Of Waste-related Issues In The School, Testing Of Ground Water Contaminants And Nitrates Around Waupun And The Horicon Marsh, And A Political Action Letter Campaign. There Were Radio Spot Announcements, And A Household Recycling Survey. This Project Represented Cross-section Of The School Teachers And Students, Grades Five Through High School Seniors. (video And Audio Tapes Were Developed). The Ten Teachers Are Continuing To Use The Materials / Strategies In Their Classes. An Additional Workshop Was Held At Kettle Moraine. A Green Bay Workshop Was Held At Bay Beach Wildlife Sanctuary. Follow-up Observation And Assistance To Teachers Was Provided. Teacher Evaluations Indicated Most Activities Were Useful And Fit Well Into Their Curricula. Sixty Teachers And School Administrators, Representing 35 Schools, Met With 30 Resource People During The Project. Two Field Trips Were Taken To Exemplary School Forests In Merrill And Wausau. As A Result, Numerous Participants Have Formed Committees To Improve Their School Forest Curriculum. School Forest Enhancement Projects Continue In Bayfield, Washburn, Glidden, Rhinelander, Winter, And Superior. Teachers Attending This Conference Have Received Awards And Sought Continued Funding For Their Projects. Also Included Was A Department Head From Each Of Four Disciplines And An Elementary School Principal. Two Major Goals Were: 1) To Determine How Several Projects Would Impact On The School Forest (through Student Field Activities) And 2) To Work In Cooperative Groups To Collect Data And Hold A Panel Discussion On The Projects, Followed By A Written Report. Summary Evaluations Indicated That It Was Well Received And Forced Teachers To Plan Together Across Subject-area Boundaries. It Involved 1) Production Of Educator Reference Guides, 2) Educator Workshops, And 3)resource Centers. The Reference Guides Were Distributed To Every Public And Private Elementary An Secondary School In Milwaukee County, As Well As To The Resource Centers For The Public. The Educator Workshops For Elementary And Secondary Teachers Received Outstanding Ratings. Resource Centers Were Set Up At The KGMB Office And At Havenwoods Nature Center. It Included A Lending Library System For Materials And On-going Newsletters To Inform The Public About Resources Available. This Project Was Also The First-place Winner In A Nat Year: 1990WEEB Grant: $8,472 Contribution: $8,017 Title: Lifestyles- Choices & Responsibility Org: 4 H Douglas County Grant: 1-0022-EE Contact: Fariba Pendleton Addr1: 1313 Belknap, 203 Courthouse Addr2: Superior WI 54880- Phone: 715-394-0363 Synopsis: This was a one-day workshop to encourage self and earth awareness, kinship, joy, and hope. Twenty-five people attended. Items covered were: 1) recycling In Douglas County, 2) basic eco-concepts, 3) the impact of humans on the environment, 4) values clarification, 5) personal eco-responsibility. Finally, the workshop participants made a commitment t adopt less consumptive, low impact lifestyles and share their awareness and knowledge with others. Pre- And post-seminar evaluations showed marked improvement in environmental awareness among participants. This Was Done Through Development Of A 1 1/4 Mile Trail And Preparation Of A General Walking Tour Guide, A Core Curriculum, And A Trail Curriculum Guide, Including Seasonal Activities. The Final Report Includes A Well-documented Activity Summary. This Is A Model Program Involving The Public And Private Sector, As Well As Teachers, Students, And Administrators. Three Saturday Morning In-service Workshops Were Presented To Teachers In Order To Develop Awareness To Environmental Issues And Help Infuse EE Across The Curriculum. grant Funds Were Used To Bring In Outside Resource People And Provide A Stipend For Attendees. Total Participation At The 3 Sessions Was 43 Teachers. Each Teacher Was Required To Develop A Lesson Plan For Their Discipline And Address Ways In Which The Courtyard Could Be Used To Teach Their Subject. Lesson Plans Were Submitted With The Final Report Of This Project. This Is A Continuing Project. High St. Addr2: Milton WI 53563- Phone: 608-868-7811 Synopsis: Gifted And Talented High School Students Researched Environment Pollution Through A Cooperative Effort With A Local Corporation. The Result Was This Local Recycling Project Designed To Educate The Commercial, Industrial, And Residential Communities About The Myths, Facts, And Methods Of Recycling. Second, Leadership Skills Were Developed Among High School Students Who Will Direct The Project. Two Telephone Surveys Were Conducted On Waste Management. The Group Prepared Multi-media Presentations With Targeted Audiences. They Also Organized A Conference Of Representatives From Variety Of Milton Community Youth Groups Outside Of School, Designed T Facilitate Neighborhood Recycling Efforts. A Six-member Committee Developed A 100 Page Teachers Guide, Recycling Information Material, And Recycling Resource Box For Each Of 24 Elementary Schools. Two Six-hour Teacher Inservices Were Held For 16 Fourth Grade Staff, Covering Topics On Solid Waste And Including Field Trips. The 4th Grade Recycling Education Curriculum Has Been Developed And Distributed To Each Public And Private Participating Elementary School Within The District The West Allis Recycling Coordinator Maintains Contact With The 4th Grade Staff Through Personal Calls And A Newsletter. The Four-week Teaching Unit Was Successfully Taught In 1991 And Is Expected To Be Included In The On-go Year: 1990WEEB Grant: $9,989 Contribution: $6,326 Title: Restoration Of Blue Bird Habitat Org: Stoughton Middle School Grant: 1-5621-EE Contact: Environmental Education Addr1: Box 189 Addr2: Stoughton WI 53589- Phone: 608-873-2684 Synopsis: Middle School Students Built Bluebird Houses Out Of Recycled Scraps Of Lumber Collected At Various Locations In The Area. In Spring Of 1991, Students Put Up The Houses And Kept Individual Records, Using A Standardized Form From The Bluebird Restoration Association Of Wisconsin. These Records Will Eventually Be Entered Into Computer For Tracking. 132 Middle School Children In 6th And 7th Grades Were Involved. presented Project 2/24/93 At State Capitol With Jamie Kellnhofer, Kelly Barnkow. Thirteen Of These Materials Were Purchased Under The WEEB Funds. A Resource Guide Was Developed And Will Be Distributed To Area Schools In January And February. A Two-day Workshop Was Held For Educators And Leaders From Priority Watershed Areas: Seventeen Enrolled. Each Received Copies Of The Developed Curriculum. A Number Of Useful Recommendations Were Developed By Participants, And Much Enthusiasm Was Developed For Water Monitoring. An Update Rcvd 12/92 Indicated That The Riveredge Nature Center Incorporated Testing The Waters Under Its Umbrella. Five New Schools Joined The Program In 1992/93; Five More Will Be Added In 93/94. Participants Noted An Increased Knowledge Of The Environmental Education Program And Its Infusion, And An Increase In Environmental Sensitivity. Twelve Participants And Two Group Facilitators Divided Into Three Groups And Visited A Variety Of Environmental Facilities Gathering Information That Was Then Developed Into Curriculum Resource Materials. A Subsidy From The Grant Was Provided To Encourage Enrollment In The Network And To Produce A Resource Manual And Materials. A Variety Of Materials Have Been Exchanged Between Participants. And Evaluation Of The System Is Scheduled For Fall 1991. Membership In The School Network Was Subsidized Under This Grant. Only The June Workshop Was Held, With Involved 11 Youth And 1 Adult Leader For A 3-day Workshop At Upham Woods. The Workshop Was Designed To Foster Interest In Recycling And Other Projects. Participants Indicated By Follow-up Mail That The Workshop Was A Worthwhile Experience, But The Project Was Largely Unfinished And Most Of The Funds Were Not Used. The Curriculum And Teaching Materials Which Were Developed Will Be In Use Statewide For At Least Two More Years, By Up Toe 10,000 Youth. Two Youth Artists Provided Their Work For The Curriculum. A Ring Binder Of Fact Finders Curriculum Was Placed In All 72 UW-extension Offices In The State, And Piloted With Over 50 Youth And Adults In Bayfield, Lincoln, And Polk Counties.
