State Education and Environment Roundtable
Mission is to aid state education agencies in their efforts
to improve learning by incorporating environment-based education into schools. Roundtable
members coined the term EIC, using the environment as an integrating context, to represent
the type of environment-based education that they seek to promote. They defined EIC as:
education that employs natural and built environments as the context for learning and
within that framework crosses traditional disciplinary boundaries; relies on team
teaching; provides hands-on learning experiences, often through project-based
problem-solving activities; offers cooperative learning opportunities; and adapts to the
needs of individual students through learner-centered methods.

are included. Global Warming
Site contains a map of the world,
which illustrates global climate change. It includes global
warming Fingerprints (places with direct manifestations of
widespread and long-term trend toward warmer global
temperatures) and global warming Harbingers (events that
foreshadow the types of impacts likely to become more frequent
and widespread with continued warming). In addition to viewing
the entire global map, you can click on individual continents to
explore the current local indicators of global warming. The website

goal of the pilot project is to demonstrate that acquiring and
using current environmental and real-time weather data in middle
school classrooms, in ways that embrace the dynamic and the
uncertain natures of these data, will promote the teaching and
learning of significant mathematics, consistent with the
standards set by the National
Council of Teachers of Mathematics.

on-line teaching module for middle school science teachers uses
cycles to introduce the atmosphere as a whole, climate, the
greenhouse effect, global climate change, and ozone both the
"good" ozone in the stratospheric ozone shield and the
"bad" ozone that pollutes our cities. Each section
offers background materials and several classroom activities
that let students become hands-on participants in the scientific
discovery process. Materials are aligned with the national
standards for science and math education.
Environmental
Protection Agency Online Greenhouse Gas Calculator provides
a fast, easy- to-use way to obtain a rough estimate of your
family's annual greenhouse gas emissions from transportation,
home energy use, and waste disposal. After you calculate your

of carbon dioxide you could shave off your total by taking
some cost-effective actions to reduce your impact on the
environment.
