ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION

Association for Supervision & Curriculum Development (ASCD)  "Education Topic: Environmental Education" ASCD education topics are short multimedia lessons on topics that interest all levels of educators. Each lesson includes a definition, short articles on the topic, audio files of experts and practitioners and a listing of resources that you can use to continue your professional development. Access the education topic on environmental education at www.ascd.org/cms/index.cfm?TheViewID=2103&flag=2103, or go to the ASCD Web site click "Education Topic" on the top navigation bar and click on "Environmental Education.

Committee for the National Institute for the Environment (CNIE): mission is to improve the scientific basis for making decisions on environmental issues. An extensive site including: country and state briefing books, on-line environmental journals, job opportunities, and meeting and conference information.

Earth Day Network listing of local, national, and international Earth Day events.

EE-Link (NCEET) An extensive site including: classroom resources, professional resources, g rant resources, job resources, student resources, EE calendar, and environmental data.

Electronic Naturalist on-line education program providing a weekly environmental education unit. Each unit has artwork, text, activities, additional web sites, plus online access to a professional naturalist. Two reading levels are available for grades K-3 (Quick Read) and 4-8 (Full Read). Units cover "creepy crawlies", insects, fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, mammals, plants, and environmental issues. Sponsored by Roger Tory Peterson Institute of Natural History and Cayuga Nature Center.

Envirolink is a collaborative efforts among educators, the EnvironLink Network and the environmental community to bring environmental education on-line and into a multimedia format. The EEN will act as the clearinghouse for all environmental education information, materials and ideas on the Internet. 

Environmental Education Training Partnership (EETAP) works to improve and expand existing quality EE training efforts.

Minority Environmental Leadership Development Initiative (MELDI)  aims to enhance the leadership and career development opportunities available to minority students and minority environmental professionals. The project seeks to provide information that will help more minority students embark on careers in the environmental field. It is also designed to help minority students and professionals in the environmental field take advantage of networking and mentoring opportunities. Though the website focuses on minorities, it provides information that will be useful to all students and environmental professionals.

National Environmental Education and Training Foundation

National Environmental Education Advancement Project (NEEAP) a national organization which aids state and local environmental education leaders in promoting their environmental education efforts, and develops informational items on building state capacity for environmental education.

North American Association for Environmental Education a network of professionals and students working throughout North America and in over 55 countries around the world.

Roger Tory Peterson Institute  Electronic Naturalist Website: Weekly units include information on animals, plants, and environmental issues, 2 reading levels, Spanish versions, interdisciplinary activities, and email access to professional naturalists (see Electronic Naturalist listing above for more information).
 

Second Nature: Educators and others share information about their environmental and sustainability initiatives. - 425 course syllabi and reading lists are available through the Courses database; - 100 innovative teaching techniques and example applications are available through the Methods database; - 2,000 bibliographic references are available through the Biblio database; and - 75 stories of sustainability initiatives at higher education institutions are available through the EFS Profiles database.

SEEK - Sharing Environmental Education Knowledge Highlights environmental education programs in Minnesota.

State Education and Environment Roundtable Mission is to aid state education agencies in their efforts to improve learning by incorporating environment-based education into schools. Roundtable members coined the term EIC, using the environment as an integrating context, to represent the type of environment-based education that they seek to promote. They defined EIC as: education that employs natural and built environments as the context for learning and within that framework crosses traditional disciplinary boundaries; relies on team teaching; provides hands-on learning experiences, often through project-based problem-solving activities; offers cooperative learning opportunities; and adapts to the needs of individual students through learner-centered methods.

Think Earth: Site features peer reviews of EE materials, online calendar of events, searchable database of EE organizations, programs, and clubs.

FORESTRY

American Forests

Forest Products Society (FPS) A site with a lot of informational resources that is also very well linked to other sites. 

ForestryUSA is dedicated to being the most comprehensive source of Internet information on America's forestry and the forest products sectors. Their directories contain up-to-date links to the major forest-related websites and services include forestry employment opportunities, forestry news, and business opportunities.

Forest World This site has databases, wood ID information, etc..

Great Lakes Forest Alliance 

Lakes States Lumber Association Information including buyers guide, membership information, etc..

National Association of State Foresters a non-profit organization that represents the directors of the State Forestry agencies from all fifty states, eight U.S. territories (American Samoa, the Federated States of Micronesia, Guam, the Northern Marianas Islands, Palau, Puerto Rico, Republic of the Marshall Islands, and the U.S. Virgin Islands), and the District of Columbia. Website has links to state forestry statistics, state forestry homepages (e.g, DNR forestry program), and extensive forestry links including information about Smokey Bear and Woodsy Owl.

National Forest Protection Alliance The National Forest Protection Alliance (NFPA) was launched in 1999 by grassroots activists from every region of the United States dedicated to ending commercial logging on National Forests and all federal public lands.

Project Learning Tree

Society of American Foresters (SAF) is the national scientific and educational organization representing the forestry profession in the United States. Founded in 1900 by Gifford Pinchot, it is the largest professional society for foresters in the world. The mission of the Society of American Foresters is to advance the science, education, technology, and practice of forestry; to enhance the competency of its members; to establish professional excellence; and, to use the knowledge, skills, and conservation ethic of the profession to ensure the continued health and use of forest ecosystems and the present and future availability of forest resources to benefit society.

Society of Wood Science and Technology (SWST) This includes SWST news and publication information, also good educational information including directory of forest products educational programs.

Treeture: Sponsored by the USDA Forest Service, American Forests, National Tree Trust, International Society of Arboriculture, Trees America, and J.H. Blau, Inc. A website for children that uses "Treetures" (tree creatures) to teach about tree planting, tree care, and the value of trees.

KidsGardening Teacher resources, school garden ideas, list of grant programs

NatureServe a source for authoritative conservation information on more than 50,000 plants, animals, and ecological communities of the United States and Canada. NatureServe provides in-depth information on rare and endangered species, but includes common plants and animals too. NatureServe is a product of the Association for Biodiversity Information in collaboration with the Natural Heritage Network.

GEOLOGY/GEOGRAPHY/METEROLOGY/WEATHER

EPA Global Warming Site for Educators Site contains materials that can be used in presentations and classroom activities on climate change science, potential impacts, and mitigation options. Green house gas calculator, case studies, interactive software to measure energy consumption are included.

Global Warming  Site contains a map of the world, which illustrates global climate change. It includes global warming Fingerprints (places with direct manifestations of widespread and long-term trend toward warmer global temperatures) and global warming Harbingers (events that foreshadow the types of impacts likely to become more frequent and widespread with continued warming). In addition to viewing the entire global map, you can click on individual continents to explore the current local indicators of global warming. The website also includes a link to a Curriculum Guide consisting of four different activities that can be downloaded using Adobe acrobat. The site also contains a link to the findings from the first US National Assessment of the Potential Consequences of Climate Variability and Change.

Kids Web--Geology and Earth Science Want to ask a geologist? Find out about the Vermont Whale? What is the earthquake of the day? These and many other question can be answered while browsing the web.

National Geographic for Kids

The University Corporation for Atmospheric Research (UCAR) received funding from the National Science Foundation to prepare a middle school mathematics module incorporating real-time weather data. The project is called "SkyMath".The goal of the pilot project is to demonstrate that acquiring and using current environmental and real-time weather data in middle school classrooms, in ways that embrace the dynamic and the uncertain natures of these data, will promote the teaching and learning of significant mathematics, consistent with the standards set by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics.

YourSky is a virtual planetarium. Visitors to the site can use the Sky Map to produce astronomical maps by entering time and date, viewpoint, and observing location (latitude/longitude, ascension/declination, or city). The Virtual Telescope helps you to track comets and asteroids, and Horizon Views returns views of the stars above the horizon as seen from a specified observing site at a given date and time. Full explanations of map colors and symbols are provided, along with links to related programs.

WEATHER

Cycles of the Earth and Atmosphere This on-line teaching module for middle school science teachers uses cycles to introduce the atmosphere as a whole, climate, the greenhouse effect, global climate change, and ozone both the "good" ozone in the stratospheric ozone shield and the "bad" ozone that pollutes our cities. Each section offers background materials and several classroom activities that let students become hands-on participants in the scientific discovery process. Materials are aligned with the national standards for science and math education.

Environmental Protection Agency Online Greenhouse Gas Calculator provides a fast, easy- to-use way to obtain a rough estimate of your family's annual greenhouse gas emissions from transportation, home energy use, and waste disposal. After you calculate your emissions, the calculator enables you to see how many pounds of carbon dioxide you could shave off your total by taking some cost-effective actions to reduce your impact on the environment.

Audubon Ark:  Under the auspices of Audubon�s Upper Mississippi River Campaign, a boat called the �Audubon Ark� will travel on the river and dock at 30 riverfront communities in October, 2000, celebrating and honoring the natural and cultural heritage of the great Mississippi River.

Isaak Walton League of America

The Journey North Student Themes: the environment, wildlife migration, different cultures -- and more. While students share observations on wildlife migration with each other, they also receive reports from the explorers on their training trip.

National Audubon Society

National Fish and Wildlife Foundation  a nonprofit charitable organization dedicated to the conservation and management of fish, wildlife, and plant resources, and the habitats on which they depend. Among its goals are species conservation, habitat protection, environmental education, natural resources management, habitat and ecosystem rehabilitation and restoration, and leadership training for conservation professionals.

National Wildlife Federation

Project WILD one of the most widely used conservation and environmental education programs among educators of students in kindergarten through high school. Project WILD is based on the premise that young people and educators have a vital interest in learning about our natural world. The program emphasizes wildlife--because of its intrinsic and ecological values, as well as its importance as a basis for teaching how ecosystems function.

Shorebird Sister School Program (SSSP)  invites you to �Migrate with Us!�  SSSP is an Internet based environmental education program that connects students, educators, biologists, and birding enthusiasts along migratory flyways.  The program includes 2-12 curriculum, an email network, and a web site.  To get involved, send a message to sssp@fws.gov requesting to contact your local/regional SSSP coordination or asking about upcoming educator workshops.  More information is also available at 

US Geological Service: Midcontinent Ecological Science Center: Children's Butterfly Site contains a photo gallery of butterflies from around the world.

World Wildlife Fund Known worldwide by its panda logo, World Wildlife Fund (WWF) is dedicated to protecting the world's wildlife and wildlands. The largest privately supported international conservation organization in the world, WWF has more than 1 million members in the U.S. alone.
