             ABSTRACT

   Limit to space provided.

A one week investigation at Hope Elementary revealed an average of 5.2 gallons of milk wasted daily and a first day food waste of 70.4 pounds. This proposal would create instructional units for fifth grade students which focus on resource distribution and utilization—specifically food resources—as related to personal decisions and actions.

Municipal solid waste (MSW), specifically ways to reduce it, is being addressed within Sharington.  Residents are actively engaged in county sponsored recycling programs that collect aluminum, glass, newsprint and some plastics. This proposal would enable a new food waste separation system to be initiated and piloted at the elementary school. Interested sixth grade students (same cohort of students -just the next academic year) will then reach out to and educate members of the larger community about food waste to resource initiatives through programs they design, implement and evaluate.

The project director will share details of the curricula modifications at the 2008 Wisconsin Association for Environmental Education (WAEE) fall conference. Information about the initial school pilot program will be shared by students and staff at a school board meeting. Sixth grade students will showcase their programming efforts at the annual science fair event.
