Abstract: Third and fourth grade students at Gneiss School for the Arts will experience interdisciplinary, standards based, hands-on learning opportunities via the implementation of a gardening/greening school grounds curriculum (Buds & Sprouts). Expected outcomes include enhanced knowledge, appreciation, and skills related to the importance of plants (specifically people’s relationship to and dependence upon biotic resources). Learning will be assessed via an analysis of journal entries (ideally evidence of more sophisticated descriptions and/or drawings as individual student journal entries continue over time); enhanced understanding of the requirements for plant growth (via the successful cultivation of a garden); and increased percentage of students achieving “proficient” and “advanced” performance ratings on the math and science portions of the Wisconsin Knowledge and Concept Exam (WKCE).
Others in the community (Master Gardeners, Summer Club members, PTO members and PlantWell Nursery) have agreed to provide assistance.
