2008 Conference Participant Information

Participant Preparation Activity

All conference participants should complete the Participant Preparation Activity. This activity will help participants feel comfortable with their energy knowledge level and enable them to expand upon this knowledge at the conference.

Answer the questions below. The Internet is a good source for information if you need assistance. Work can be done independently or as a group. The suggested answers can be obtained by teachers by emailing Carrie Ziolkowski at cziolkow@uwsp.edu.

  1. Define energy efficiency in your own words.

  2. Define energy conservation in your own words.

  3. Define renewable energy in your own words.

  4. Why are energy efficiency, energy conservation and renewable energy important?

  5. Please list ways that you can reduce your energy consumption. Use the Resources pages for the Governor’s High School Conference on the Environment if you need help!

  6. There are many energy resources that can be used as a source if energy. What energy resources can you add to this list?
    Coal
    Solar
    Diesel

  7. Next to the energy resources identified in question 7 write if it is a renewable or a nonrenewable energy resource.

  8. List one positive and one negative aspect of using each of the energy resources listed in question 7.

  9. Find out what energy efficiency, energy conservation, and renewable energy activities are currently being done in your community or area of the state. Make contact with your local electrical utility and/or your local government to see if they can help answer these questions. How can these activities change the community and the state of Wisconsin for the better?
