Students Making a Difference:
Citizen Science Monitoring

Wednesday, November 14, 2007
Country Springs Hotel Conference & Convention Center
Stevens Point, Wisconsin

The 16th High School Conference on the Environment offered an opportunity to learn how to make a difference through citizen science monitoring. Participants left prepared to lead others in an environmental monitoring project. They learned how to take the next step with a monitoring project they were already conducting. They visited with professionals who use monitoring as part of their careers. They discovered what high school and university students were doing around the state.

Thank you to all of our participating schools, keynote speakers, presenters, exhibitors, careers professionals, and volunteers! You all helped make this event a success!

2007 Event Summary

Governor Jim Doyle's Conference Welcome:

Governor DoyleGreetings!

I am pleased to welcome you to Stevens Point for the 2007 Governor's High School Conference on the Environment.

Wisconsin has a long tradition of celebrating and protecting our state's natural resources. I am proud of all the dedicated students and teachers of Wisconsin that came today for this year's conference. Your dedication to improving Wisconsin's environment is invaluable and I applaud your efforts. This year's theme, Students Making a Difference: Citizen Science Monitoring, will contribute to environmental monitoring efforts that effect change in local communities, across the state, and the nation.

Today, you will learn about citizen science monitoring programs and their importance in the expansion of scientific knowledge. You will also explore ways to become active citizens and lead others in conducting monitoring research. Enjoy the opportunity to present your research and network with other high school and university students, and career professionals.

Thank you for being "Citizen Scientists" and for participating in the exchange of ideas, information and inspiration for such important research. Have a good conference!

Sincerely,
Jim Doyle
Governor
