2006 Governor's High School Conference On the Environment

November 15, 2006
Stevens Point, Wisconsin
Logo designed by Elizabeth E. Weber of Mondovi High School

The 15th Annual High School Conference on the Environment theme was Climate Change Up Close: Investigating the Issue in Wisconsin and Beyond. Conference sessions fell into three strands: Nature and Causes, Impacts and Effects and Solutions.

Each high school in Wisconsin was invited to send up to eight students to the conference. These students served as "ambassadors" and were required to bring an exhibit presentation to share. Teachers were encouraged to recruit students who had an active interest in the environment and who showed leadership potential. Individual students or non school-based groups were also encouraged to participate.

The cost of the conference, which includes lunch, was $10 per person if postmarked on or before September 25, 2006 and $15 per person if postmarked after September 25, 2006.

A Message from Governor Jim Doyle

Greetings!

I am pleased to invite you to participate in the 2006 Governor's High School Conference on the Environment on November 15, 2006 at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. This conference is an excellent opportunity for you to help uphold Wisconsin's long tradition of celebrating and protecting our state's natural resources.

Wisconsin has a rich history of environmental protection. From leading the country in mercury reduction, to being home to the largest group certification of nationally-owned forest lands in North America, Wisconsin revels in its devotion to a clean environment. And Earth Day, now nationally celebrated, was founded right here in Wisconsin by former Governor Gaylord Nelson. I hope you will take this opportunity to both be a part of our state’s history and to help set the tone for the future of environmental responsibility.

This year’s theme, Climate Change Up Close: Investigating the Issue in Wisconsin and Beyond, presents students and teachers a timely opportunity to help Wisconsin lead the country in climate change response during a critical time that demands conscientious citizens.

During the conference, students will investigate the nature and causes of climate change, its impact and effects, as well as responses to climate change around the world to see what can be done here in Wisconsin, while also helping you to develop the vital leadership skills our state, country, and world will soon depend on.

I hope that you choose to take advantage of this unique chance to exchange ideas and information through a student-centered conference.

Sincerely,
