The
KEEP Activity Guide is only available to educators who take the KEEP
course NR 730. Please check our
Professional Development pages for course schedules or contact
the KEEP office for how to
schedule a course. The guide provides teachers with
48 hands-on, interdisciplinary lessons and over 100 Energy Sparks,
or suggested teaching variations, that are aligned with
Wisconsin's academic standards and make energy relevant to
students' lives. The full activities include all required handouts, assessment strategies,
and comprehensive descriptions of the activity. The KEEP
Activity Guide has a Student Book that includes all the
students pages for activities that are within the Activity Guide. |
Like the framework, the KEEP Activity Guide is organized around four themes. Each theme
consists of concepts which are further organized into sub-themes. The themes are arranged so that they build upon each other. The information in the first theme lends
understanding to concepts in the second theme, and so forth. For more information, see the Activity Guide
Table of Contents. The themes are:
- We Need Energy defines energy, describes how energy is transferred and converted from one form to another according to the laws of thermodynamics, and explains how energy flows through living and nonliving systems. For a sample activity from this theme, see: Evidence of Energy (grades K-2):
Evidence.pdf
- Developing Energy Resources
addresses the sources of energy and how humans, through technology, use
energy to meet societal wants and needs. It also shows how humans have
come to treat energy as a resource.
- Effects of Energy Resource Development covers how using energy resources affects human societies and the environment. For a sample activity from this theme, see: Advertising Energy (grades 6-8):
Advertising.pdf and
Student Book page.
- Managing Energy Resource Use
identifies strategies we can use to help resolve many of the issues
presented in the third theme. In addition, this theme discusses how
today's energy-related decisions and actions influence the future
availability of energy resources.
The KEEP Activity Guide also includes cross-reference charts that help teachers find the best activity for a particular situation. For
example, you could use the charts to find an activity for 3rd graders that meets Wisconsin's Science Standards. Several of
these charts are available for you:
