Safe Routes to School:
Alternative Transportation
How do you get to school? Does your transportation choice help keep you healthy? How much pollution do you create while traveling to school? What other transportation options do you have?
The Bookmark Contest Support Page will answer these questions and more!
What does school have to do with transportation? Think about all the people and supplies and food that are delivered to your school every day. That is a lot of driving around. Conventional forms of transportation rely on engines fueled by gasoline or diesel. Combustion of these petroleum-based fuels creates pollution that is harmful to plant, animal, and human health. One of these pollutants, ozone, can irritate your respiratory system, aggravate lung disease like bronchitis, or cause permanent lung damage. Do you want all of those problems right outside the school's front door?
Instead of taking a car to school, is it possible to ride a bike or walk? The Wisconsin Safe Routes to School Program is a great way to keep kids healthy while reducing the amount of pollution produced by vehicles.
When thinking about a bookmark design, consider students that are already biking or walking to school. A possible design idea is the route they take or how fun it is to come to school with a group of friends. Maybe the design could be a way to encourage more students to walk or bike.
If biking or walking to school isn't an option, think about other times that students walk or bike. Design a bookmark that shows students biking or walking for recreation or visiting in their neighborhood.

There is a lot of interest in transportation because of high gas prices and huge amounts of pollution in the atmosphere. Here are some teacher resources on transportation and pollution.
