Example LessonsAs a final assignment, participants in GET programs are required to create lesson plans and/or educational plans demonstrating how they will infuse global education or environmental education concepts into their classroom following their international experience. Over 75 lessons have been created by participants. We have listed some of our best lessons below. We have also created a database of participant lessons. It is arranged in a spreadsheet format by their grade level.

EXAMPLE LESSON ONE: SUSTAINABILITY This lesson is a great example about how you can infuse information about international places into existing lessons. Read through this lesson and think about how you could construct a lesson similar to this with some place that you have traveled or have in your backyard! Grade Level: 5 Subject: Environmental Education Objectives: Upon the completion of this lesson students will define the sustainable use of natural resources and describe the consequences of unsustainable use of resources. Lesson by Kim Lemberger
EXAMPLE LESSON TWO: CREATURES THAT "GLOW" IN THE NIGHT! This lesson is unique to Puerto Rico, and a great lesson to use in high school science classes. This is a hands-on lesson that explores dinoflagellates and has your students watching them "glow" in your classroom! Grade Level: 9-12 Subject: Biology Objectives: Upon the completion of this lesson students will be able to explain why some organisms are bioluminescent, and will be able to design and analyze a scientific experiment. Lesson by Sara Krauskopf
EXAMPLE LESSON THREE: ISLAND CULTURE (PUERTO RICO) "Island Culture" is a lesson that focuses on the cultural and historical aspects of Puerto Rico. Use this lesson in your classroom to teach your students about Puerto Rico, or use it as a template for a potential lesson based off of your own travel experiences. Grade Level: 9-12 Subject: Social Studies, Spanish Objectives: Upon the completion of this lesson students will have an understanding of the history of Puerto Rico, its relationship with the mainland United States, as well as become more familiar with the language, food, music, folktales and more. Lesson by Cari Frederickson
EXAMPLE LESSON FOUR: MATH MISSION "Math Mission" incorporates concepts from Puerto Rico into a K-4 math lesson. This lesson is especially useful in the classroom because you can do a similar lesson with species in your back yard. This creates a healthy learning context for younger students to absorb international lessons. Grade Level: 2 (K-4) Subject: Math and Environmental Education Objectives: Upon the completion of this lesson students will be able to write a math story problem, will be able to act out a math story problem, and will be able to give reasons for increasing and decreasing populations of different species from Puerto Rico. Lesson by Hanna Anderson
EXAMPLE LESSON FIVE: HERE AND THERE "Here and There" incorporates temperature conversions and comparison between South Africa (or any other country) and the US. This lesson can give your classroom somewhere warm to think about in the heart of winter while challenging their math skills. Grade Level: 3 Subject: Science and Math Objectives: Upon completion of these lessons, students will be able to plot temperature data points on a line graph, compare temperatures using information from the line graph, and explain reasons for the difference in temperature. Lesson by Laureanna Raymond-Duvernell
EXAMPLE LESSON SIX: CORAL REEF BLEACHING "Coral Reef Bleaching" focuses on the life of coral and the problems that it is facing in the world's oceans. It includes an online simulation to demonstrate how environmental change effects the life cycle of coral. Grade Level: 9-12 Subject: Science Objectives: Upon completion of this lesson, students will be able to learn coral biology, the threats that face corals, and identify ways to protect and/or heal corals.
