Sample Itinerary: South Africa

Table Mountain in Cape Town, South Africa

 

Day 1

US teachers arrive and spend the night at Addo Elephant Park.
Day 2

In the morning go on safari at Addo Elephant Park. In the afternoon, drive to Rhodes University to learn about the Environmental Education and Sustainability Unit (EESU).

Day 3

Visit some local schools and learn about the Eco-Schools Program in South Africa. In the afternoon, staff at EESU will give an overview of South Africa's Education System.

Day 4

Drive to the Great Fish River Reserve and tour the site with natural resource managers and scientist doing research in the area. That afternoon, return to the EESU for a lecture on environmental education and indigenous knowledge.

Day 5

Drive to Oudtshoorn stopping at Storms River Gorge and Jeffery's Bay.

Day 6

The next morning, visit the natural landscape to learn about the unique succulent ecosystem. That afternoon drive to Potberg Environmental Education Centre.

Day 7

At Potberg, engage in educational HIV/AIDS programs offered to South African schools. That afternoon, hike the mountains on the reserve.

Day 8

Field trip to the ocean to explore the coastal biodiversity and study dune ecology.

Day 9

In the morning, go on a guided hike from Potberg. And in the afternoon, share best teaching practices and activities with other teachers.

Day 10

Drive to Stellenbosch University. In the afternoon enjoy a field trip to Spier for Cheetah Breeding Program, Raptor Rehabilitation Center, and Cultural Events.

Day 11

In the morning, start with an overview of the EE Center at Stellenbosch University. Learn about the programs they offer. In the afternoon, hike at Jonkershoek.

Day 12

Learn about the Limbovani Project, a scientific monitoring project for local schools to study ant species. That afternoon, a working session will be provided to allow US and South African teachers to create a long term action plan. 

Day 13

Drive to the University of Western Cape (UWC) and tour facilities including their EE unit.

Day 14

Spend the day at Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens. Learn about their outreach programs to schools.

Day 15

In the morning, go on the Robben Island Prison Tour, where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned. That afternoon will be visiting a local township and HIV/AIDS Orphanage.

Day 16

Field Trip to Table Mountain and tour around Peninsula of Good Hope. During the tour, visit a local penguin colony.

Day 17

In the morning, engage in a service learning project with Working for Water followed by a tour of Two Oceans Aquarium Educational Programs. That night, teachers will go home with their counterparts for a homestay experience.

Day 18

Teachers spend whole day with counterparts on a homestay experience. In the evening a farewell party is planned.

Day 19

Free day to pack before US teachers depart.
