How do we go about accomplishing such as society built on cooperation and peace rather than confrontation, fear, and war? In this course, we will explore just that, the importance, the why and how of a sustainable society. We will learn to work with nature rather than against it; approach problems in nature and turn them into solutions in nature; act and think globally and locally; establish a durable, waste-free resource base; and connect with like-minded individuals with the same ethical principles to form extended families that cross not only political boundaries but also cultural boundaries. NRES 679: Natural Resources, History and Culture of Island Ecosystems: Puerto Rico Online Course, See dates and details below
Location: Online Dates: This course will be offered February 4 - March 3, 2008 for teachers going to Puerto Rico on a GET Teacher Exchange in June 20008.
This is a one credit online (web-based) course that provides an overview of island origins and evolution. Participants will explore the importance of natural resources and biodiversity of island ecosystems, investigate threats that islands face, and discuss Puerto Rico as a case study. The history and culture of Puerto Rico will be shared in addition to an examination of this island's current environmental issues.

NRES 679: International Environmental Studies Seminar: South Africa
Location: Online Dates: This course will be offered in the Spring 2009 for teachers going to South Africa on a GET Teacher Exchange. Exact dates to be determined.
This is a one credit online course that provides an overview of South Africa in relation to its ecological origins, history, culture, and natural resources. Participants will explore the importance of South Africa's natural resources and biodiversity; investigate threats and research environmental issues; and will discuss South Africa's education system as it relates to environmental and sustainability education.
