Theme
In 1975, the Wisconsin Council for Conservation Education
decided to change its name and its focus to become a more inclusive,
vibrant and diverse organization - one able to incorporate all
different aspects of environmental education. In 2005, the Wisconsin
Association for Environmental Education (WAEE) celebrated 30 years
of learning, teaching, discovering, creating and exploring. The 2005
Fall Conference was a unique and invigorating chance for members and
friends to look back on the events, individuals and actions that
have shaped our organization, our field and our environment, as well
as a time for formal and non formal educators to look forward to the
challenges and opportunities that lie ahead. The festivities
included reminiscences about past events, special recognitions for
past board members and award winners, and nostalgic reflections on
our history.
Tracks
The conference tracks reflected four different aspects of
our history of putting principles into action:
- Action in the Classroom
- EE Centers and their Action Roles
- Personal Action: Walking the Talk
- Learning from Action: EE History and Milestones
Dedicated to the Memory of Gaylord Nelson
Former Wisconsin Governor, Senator and activist Gaylord
Nelson (1916-2005) was a tireless crusader for the environment
during his many years of public service. Although his
accomplishments and innovations are many, he is best remembered as
the founder of Earth Day. First observed in 1970, this event has
been an inspiration to millions, an opportunity to people worldwide
to put aside wars, conflicts and other differences and to come
together to support the Earth. WAEE dedicated the 2005 fall
conference to the memory of Gaylord Nelson and to celebrate one of
the most inspiring personalities of our time.
