Much of the wealth of Wisconsin lies in its 15,081 public lakes. The demands and pressures on our lakes continue to escalate. To assure that these treasures are secure, tens of thousands of volunteers have invested heavily of their time and dollars. They have organized to ensure that Wisconsin's public waters receive the attention and care they deserve.

Picture (100x108, 3Kb) Wisconsin lake organizations date back over one hundred years. We believe the first lake organization was the Lauderdale Lakes Association which formed in 1902. Wisconsin has the largest number of lake organizations in the nation. Today over 600 lake organizations, both lake districts and lake associations, work hard to preserve and protect Wisconsin's legacy of lakes.

The number of organizations has increased 38% in the past ten years and continues to grow. The maps show the number and location of our lake organizations. See the Lake List on this site for more details.
