Award Categories

There are six categories in which the Wisconsin Lakes Partnership annually acknowledges Wisconsin Lake Stewards:

  • Citizen This category celebrates the many dedicated volunteers whose actions are protecting our lakes and encouraging others to do the same. They are, for example, working with local governments to ensure that land use decisions consider lake and watershed health, providing ongoing community service, and extending a helping hand to advance lake protection goals.
  • Organized Group This category is to recognize the many types of partnerships for resource protection: lake associations, lake districts, countywide associations, conservancies, friends groups, and other collaborative efforts. A commitment to involving people in lake management decisions and being a catalyst for lake protection initiatives are a few traits of previous Stewardship Award winners in this category.
  • Public service This category is to honor public officials and employees from state and local agencies who are really making a difference in the work they do. Building meaningful relationships, overcoming big challenges, and teaching people how to make well-informed lake management decisions are a few traits that distinguish nominees in this category.
  • Youth This category recognizes young lake leaders or youth groups showing local or regional leadership getting their peers excited about lakes, monitoring and studying lakes, and doing lake related projects.
  • Educator This category recognizes environmental educators who have made learning about lakes a priority through innovative projects and interactive learning experiences. Nominees here may be classroom teachers or informal educators for either youth or adults.
  • Business This category recognizes firms that have shown outstanding commitment to the ecological health of our lakes, and in assisting lake communities with the development and implementation of sound lake management plans.

Not only are we honored to recognize one outstanding person or group in each of these six categories each year, but the Wisconsin Lakes Partnership is proud of the accomplishments and contributions of all Wisconsin Lake Stewardship Awards nominees, past and present.  In fact, there are likely numerous unsung heroes who do excellent work on behalf of lakes and never receive a nomination for a Lake Stewardship Award.  We are proud to celebrate all Wisconsin lake stewards and all that they do.

The intent of this awards program is to confer special recognition on those who have been acknowledged by their peers as outstanding examples of the lake stewardship ethic shared by countless Wisconsinites, past, present, and future.  Winners of this prestigious award will join a distinguished group of lake stewards that have been formally recognized for the mark they made on Wisconsin’s lakes, lake life, and/or lake people.

Note: Choose the one category that fits most closely – the Wisconsin Lake Stewardship Awards Committee may elect to move a nominee from one category to another, but will not do so without first contacting the nominator to inform her/him of the decision

Check list for a complete Wisconsin Lake Stewardship Award nomination:

Complete the online form (see link below), and then you only have to email or mail the Wisconsin Association of Lakes a few pieces of supporting material and you’ll have a complete nomination for the deserving lake steward you’d like to recognize.  The checklist below lists the requirements for a complete nomination.  Please be sure that you have done everything on the checklist prior to the January 26 deadline so that your nomination will be considered.  Thank you!

□ A completed online Nomination Form.

□ A letter of support from the nominator explaining why you feel the nominee is deserving of the Wisconsin Lake Stewardship Award.  Please keep all letters of support to no more than two (2) pages.

□ No more than six (6) and not less than two (2) letters of support from others.  A nominator must submit at least two additional letters of support from individuals or groups with knowledge of the efforts of the nominee and, better yet, experience working with the person or group who has been nominated.  The Wisconsin Lake Stewardship Awards Committee will not accept any more than 6 letters of support in addition to the one submitted by the nominator.  More letters of support will not necessarily translate into a higher ranking of the candidate – the Committee seeks quality here over quantity.  Please keep all letters of support to no more than two (2) pages.

□ No more than 3 bits of supporting information further demonstrating the nominee’s worthiness of Wisconsin Lake Stewardship Award recognition.  Examples of the kinds of materials that may be submitted here include: news articles highlighting the nominee’s efforts and contributions, copies of materials developed by the nominee, testimonials on or reactions to the nominee’s efforts, and other awards or recognition the nominee has received for their lake-related efforts, etc.  To the extent possible, please work to make these materials relevant to your petition to encourage the nominee’s selection as a Wisconsin Lake Stewardship Award winner and please provide materials electronically where possible as opposed to in hard copy.

*NOTE: The person making the nomination may seek help from the nominee in providing information for this award.
