'Clean Boats,
Clean Waters' Workshops
Volunteers were busy at the boat landing during the
summer of 2006 as they inspected 26,000 boats and
trailers for hitching aquatic invasive species. Trained
Clean Boats, Clean Waters participants addressed 61,000
boaters about the serious threat aquatic invasive
species pose Wisconsin’s lakes, and the prevention steps
every boater should take to slow their spread. With 40%
of all surveyed boaters moving within five days, it
makes sense to reach out and educate at the boat
landings. Prevention, careful inspection for hitching
plants and animals, as well as cleaning recreational
equipment, will certainly prevent more invasive spread.
To
keep the momentum going, the Clean Boats, Clean Waters
program sponsored by the Department of Natural
Resources, UW-Extension and Wisconsin Association of
Lakes, is again offering another series of training
workshops across the state.
These
workshops provide an opportunity to learn how and why
educational awareness is so important in preventing the
spread of aquatic invasive species.
During the Clean Boats, Clean Waters workshop, resource
professionals provide an overview of aquatic invasive
species, instructions on how to organize an effective
volunteer watercraft inspection program, and hands-on
training for watercraft inspections and invasive species
identification. Workshop participants are strongly
encouraged to purchase a
volunteer handbook and resource tool kit at a cost of
$25.00.

may be added in specific areas if there is public
