The Growing Need
The growth of
Treehaven's programs and the breadth of its user base have exceeded the
original design limitations of its present facilities and operations, which
were conceived over 20 years ago. When they were constructed, the facilities
were primarily designed to host and accommodate the "summer camp" field
training sessions required of UW-Stevens Point natural resource students.
For
the approximately 200 students who have attended these sessions over a
12-week span each summer, the academic and dormitory-style facilities are
more than adequate.
Today, however,
UWSP's natural resource students represent only a fraction of the visitors
who use Treehaven throughout the year.Treehaven's natural beauty, and
longstanding reputation for quality services and programs has generated
interest from an increasing variety of users, ranging from school children
to professional and business groups to senior citizens. To those of us who
care about the environment, this is good news. In today's urbanized world,
connecting people from all walks of life to the natural environment is
becoming increasingly important, and is central to the Treehaven's
educational mission.
Expanding its
capacity to serve a wide range of people year 'round is also critical to
Treehaven's fiscal future, especially in light of decreasing financial
support from the state. A proposed capital campaign would aim to expand the
reach and impact of this proven
facility by raising money for making necessary upgrades in the center's
facilities, equipment and staffing.
Treehaven's strong
legacy and existing base of facilities and programs make it uniquely poised
for the
future. The proposed capital campaign would help achieve this potential, and
allow Treehaven to bring
high quality natural resources education to a broader range of people than
ever before.
A Vision for the
Future
Needed upgrades and
improvements with corresponding benefits:
Major Capital
Projects - significant investments with immediate benefits
Addition to Fern Young Cottage - Increase
capacity from four to six bedrooms, which includes a one bedroom apartment
to accommodate UWSPs summer camp faculty and allows the use of the White
Pine and Tamarack Lodges for programs concurrently with summer camp.
New Tamarack Lodge - Similar to the
recently completed White Pine Lodge, this 8-bed double cabin unit will
expand Treehaven's ability to offer upgraded lodging to 15 people;
sufficient to accommodate small groups for courses, retreats, seminars or
workshops, even in summer months concurrent with UWSP "summer camp"
Gateway Visitor Center - Provides a
much-needed "welcome mat" front door for visitors, with
reception/information desk,
restrooms, elevator, gift shop, Treehaven donor/volunteer "wall of fame";
current gift shop would be converted to classroom/meeting space.
Endowment and
Program Enhancements - significant investments with long term benefits
Increase size of endowment to $1 million
Staffing Additions - Increases ability to provide adequate
services in areas of marketing, facility/grounds maintenance, and program
instruction.
Site Improvements
- smaller investments with immediate benefits
Trail Expansion and Improvements -
Will enhance quality of outdoor experiences for users by expanding the trail
system, adding a second rustic "Cordwood Cabin", and a boardwalk around
Beaver Pond.
Trailhead Kiosks - Improves ability to
provide maps and trail information; provides self-service fee stations at
key access points.
"Gateway To Treehaven" Signage - Easier
and more convenient access for Treehaven visitors through a master plan for
consistent, uniform, clear directional signage.
Enclosed Walkways between Classroom and Lodging
Buildings - Increases user access and convenience for conferences
and meetings during winter months and inclement weather.
Interpretive Signage - Enhance public
appreciation for the Treehaven property with information about its natural
history and onsite plant and wildlife species; also is an opportunity to
demonstrate UWSP's faculty expertise and reputation for excellence in nature
interpretation.
New GEM Long Distance Learning Lab -
Allows groups to connect with people and access learning resources anywhere
in the world. Beaver Meadow Observation Deck
- New short trail would lead to an open deck overlooking the Pickerel Creek
beaver meadow area.
New Camp Observation Tower - Provide
trail users with an elevated view of Treehaven's biodiversity; potentially a
unique and strong attraction, especially for school and youth groups.
Dragonfly Pond Listening Place - New
short trail would lead visitors past the dock at Dragonfly Pond to a
roofed/screened shelter called the Listening Place. This would serve as an
outdoor classroom and observation area overlooking the marsh and waters of
Dragonfly
Pond. The design was originated at the Birdsong Nature Center in southern
Georgia.
Major Equipment -
smaller investments with immediate benefits
Upgraded Sound Systems in Sylvester Auditorium
and Conference Room 200 - Needed for keynote speakers, lectures
and
presentations to large group gatherings.
Program Equipment - GPS units, ski sets,
telescopes, winter gear.
New Backup Generator - Increases
security and safety by providing emergency power for lighting and
refrigeration.
Smart Board - Enhances service to
conference groups by providing ability to transcribe audible speech into
computer-based text.
Replacement Utility Vehicles - 4x4 Trucks
- Essential for snowplowing and other maintenance services.
The Dream
The proposed
facility, equipment, program and site enhancements described in this
pamphlet represent a very exciting dream that benefits not only the
Rhinelander and Tomahawk regional community, but all who recognize and
appreciate the importance of quality conservation and environmental
education. Thank you for your input and suggestions to help us see the
future for Treehaven.
