Public Programs at Schmeeckle

Free hands-on nature and history programs are offered from September to May at Schmeeckle Reserve.

Everyone is welcome to attend! Hikes, talks, and workshops are geared toward a wide audience: residents, families, students, and community groups. Activities and demonstrations provide an interactive and educational experience.

Programs are presented by College of Natural Resources students majoring in environmental education and interpretation

Creatures of the Underworld

Tuesday, October 13, 5:00 - 6:00pm

They make things disappear, and transform matter into new substances. No, they’re not magicians; the mysterious creatures of the underworld have lots of tricks up their sleeves. Discover the secrets of these phantoms that lurk beneath our feet!

 

Worms in the Kitchen

Thursday, October 15, 6:00 - 7:00pm

Composting kitchen waste is a great way to provide rich soil to your garden.  Join us to explore a variety of composting methods and get a start building your own kitchen worm composter. Contact Schmeeckle to reserve your space. Cost: $4/person

 

A Page of History: Schmeeckle Reserve

Saturday, October 17, 1:00 - 2:00pm

Hike and explore through Schmeeckle Reserve searching for clues and signs of Schmeeckle’s early history (like rusty farm machinery!) Discover how the natural area that began as agricultural land grew to be the gathering place for the Stevens Point community and University.

 

Wonderful Witch Hazel

Monday, October 19, 5:00 - 6:00pm

Take a walk through the woods of Schmeeckle to discover the wonders of the marvelous plant, Witch Hazel. Explore the fascinating history and features of this plant while uncovering the variety of medicinal uses Witch Hazel has to offer.

 

Whispers of the Past... Conserving the Future

Tuesday, October 20, 5:00 - 6:00pm

Amid the chatter of green initiatives today, hear whispers of Wisconsin’s past. Head down Schmeeckle Reserve’s Trail of Reflections to experience the conservation stories and happenings that made Wisconsin famous. See the faces of the individuals that changed history at the Wisconsin Conservation Hall of Fame.

 

Fall Candlelight Hike Festival

Friday, October 30, 6:30-9:30 pm

Buzz on down to Schmeeckle Reserve and discover the creaking, flashing, fluttering insects that come out in the dark. Walk a one-mile path lit by Jack-o-Lanterns and torches through the autumn woods and along the lake.

"Insects of the Night"
Special Campfire Program at 7 p.m. and 8 p.m.

When the sun sets, Schmeeckle Reserve springs to life with the romantic blinking of fireflies, a serenade of crickets, and the soft flutter of moths. Meet the nighttime insects who Field cricketcall Schmeeckle home and discover how they thrive in the dark.

Fire Power

Fire isn’t always a destructive thing; uncover the evidence of fire within the landscape of Schmeeckle Reserve. Discover how prescribed burning is an effective tool in maintaining and enhancing healthy ecosystems.

 

Starlight, Starbright

Stars are bright and dazzle us with their twinkling abilities. But other shining performers will take the stage as well while we explore the grand phenomena of the November night sky.

 

Singing, Dancing Sandhill Cranes

Thursday, November 12, 6:00 - 7:00pm

Karr-r-r-r-o-o-o, the bubbling call of the wetland bird the Sandhill Crane.  Join us for an indoor talk about the unique adaptations that allow this bird to be successful living in a wetland.  From its beak to its toes and the fancy way this crane dances to find a mate, you will make an instant fall friend.

 

Batty Truths

You have heard many stereotypes of these night creatures, but are they true? Contrary to popular belief, bats are not blind, blood-sucking rodents with wings.

 

The Owls of Schmeeckle

Tuesday, December 1, 7:00 - 8:00pm

Experience the variety of owls hiding under the cover of darkness in Schmeeckle Reserve. Discover their unique adaptations, how they find their food, and listen to some owl calls that can be heard echoing through the forest.

 

Mammal Mayhem

Thursday, December 3, 7:00 - 8:00pm

What do mammals do when the deep snow blankets the ground during Wisconsin’s harsh winters?  Join us to find out just what makes mammals so suited to this cold environment.

 

Brrrrrds

Saturday, December 5, 11:00am - 12:00pm

Think all birds leave Wisconsin for winter? Not so! Head down to the toasty Visitor Center to check out some adaptations that allow birds to survive throughout the cold winter, and maybe get a chance to see a few first-hand!
