I call Normal, Illinois home but only get back to visit once in awhile. I graduated from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst in 1995 with a B.S. in Environmental Science. In between undergraduate and graduate school, I took 5 years off to travel and gain some work experience.
After graduating from UMass, I spent a year working on a kibbutz in northern Israel and traveling around the Middle East. When I returned home, I worked as an environmental organizer with U.S. Public Interest Research Group, a national, non-profit, environmental and consumer watchdog group. I co-directed a campaign office and organized environmental campaigns around such issues as the Clean Air Act, the Toxic Rights to Know Act, and Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness preservation.
The following year I volunteered on a research project on the guanaco (Lama guanicoe), a relative of the lama, in Torres del Paine National Park, southern Chile. My work involved gathering data on guanaco mortality, spacing strategies, migratory patterns, and feeding ecology.
After returning to the U.S., I spent the next two years working as a community organizer (one year as an Americorp/VISTA volunteer) with a small, non-profit tenants union in Minneapolis.
I am now pursuing a Master of Science degree in Environmental Education / Interpretation at the University of Wisconsin Stevens Point with hopes to work in an area that combines community organizing or teaching with a focus on environmental conservation either in a Spanish speaking country or here at home.
