The Purpose

Why are we designing computer kiosks for the Wisconsin Conservation Hall of Fame?  One of the primary goals of the Hall of Fame is to educate the public about the important people in the state's conservation history.  Currently, the Hall of Fame is divided into two parts.

Hall of Fame Museum Exhibits

One part is a museum which highlights the important events that have occurred in Wisconsin's conservation history.

Formal Hall of Fame Gallery

The other part is a formal hall that commemorates the significant contributors to the state's conservation history.  Each inductee has a special wooden plaque on the wall.  Unfortunately, the monotony of 50 wooden plaques on a wall causes many visitors to completely ignore this important part of the Hall of Fame.

The computer kiosks will be interactive exhibits that involve the visitors.  Studies have found that computer exhibits increase potential learning and hold a visitor's attention longer than other types of exhibits (see Related Readings for more information).  At this time, the educational primary goal of the Conservation Hall of Fame is not being fulfilled.  Although visitors may understand some concepts related to the historically significant events in Wisconsin, they know little or nothing about the people that are being honored in the Hall of Fame.  The computer exhibit is being created to fill this gap.

The formal goals and objectives of the project are listed below.

The Statement of the Goal

The goal of this project is to provide visitors of the Conservation Hall of Fame in the Schmeeckle Reserve with a greater appreciation and understanding of individuals who were significant in Wisconsins conservation history.  This will be done by gathering facts, stories, and pictures of selected Conservation Hall of Fame inductees, designing interesting storylines that can be incorporated into a multimedia production, and creating an interactive computer touch-screen kiosk that visitors will use to access the storylines of the inductees.

The Objectives

Objective 1

Objective 1 is to determine characteristics of target audiences that may be using the computer kiosks to access information in the future.

Objective 2

Objective 2 is to analyze the mission of the Conservation Hall of Fame and Schmeeckle Reserve, and to determine how the computer kiosk will fit into these missions.

Objective 3

Objective 3 is to utilize the audience and mission information in selecting a group of Conservation Hall of Fame inductees that will be interpreted on the computer kiosk.

Objective 4

Objective 4 is to obtain background information on the selected group of inductees through interviews, films, books, newspapers, and other documentation.

Objective 5

Objective 5 is to create short interpretive storylines based on the background information, which will present each selected inductee in an interesting and interactive manner.

Objective 6

Objective 6 is to collect or create photographs, sounds, video clips, and other multi-sensory items related to the storylines of the inductees to enhance the experience for future visitors.

Objective 7

Objective 7 is to design a touch-screen computer kiosk that will allow the storyline for each inductee to be easily accessible to the Hall of Fame visitors, and will be installed in the Schmeeckle Reserve visitor center.
