Resources & Opportunities
In order to assist states who are building capacity for environmental education and developing sustainable grassroots organizations, NEEAP offers Resources and Opportunities. In this section, you will find information and contacts geared towards networking, partnering and funding opportunities, new initiatives, and relevant Internet links and list serves.
The Environmental Education Advocate - Spring/Summer 1999
The following information is provided to you as a service of the National
Environmental Education Advancement Project (NEEAP). We encourage you to use it and
please credit the National Environmental Education
Advancement Project where appropriate.
When visiting the NEEAP website (http://neeap.uwsp.edu), be sure to visit the Organizational Development (OD) Links page listed on the NEEAP home page. NEEAP has reviewed a number of OD links and has linked to the top finds. The Lessons Learned Toolsite (http://www.arts.endow.gov/pub/Lessons/) is a new addition and is a great resource worth reviewing. This site is a comprehensive guide to organizational planning, which provides information on designing missions and visions, planning organizational assessments, group facilitation techniques, and managing conflict. All information is free and "you are invited to pick, choose, copy, and download whatever is most appropriate for the planning job at hand".
Higher Education Environmental and Sustainability Resource
Second Nature and its website resources http://www.2nature.org have grown in the past few months. Educators and others share information about their environmental and sustainability initiatives through this website, and many call it "the leading website" for such resources. Databases for course syllabi and reading lists, innovative teaching techniques and example applications, bibliographic references, and stories of sustainability initiatives at higher education institutions are just a sample of what is available. You and your professors are invited to visit the Second Nature website and contribute your own materials to the website databases. You can utilize the websites content submission forms http://www.2nature.org/contribute or email items directly to Stephen Bolton at SBolton@2nature.org. You are especially encouraged to send course syllabi and any class assignments which have helped students understand environmental or sustainability concepts. Such syllabi would be great additions to the Courses database http://www.2nature.org/programs/starfish/courses.nsf and the assignments would be useful in the Methods database http://www.2nature.org/programs/starfish/methods.nsf of teaching technique applications.
Nonprofit News Online
Nonprofit News Online is a database driven news service, not a traditional mailing list, that provides regular updates about websites that are useful to nonprofit organizations. You can register for this weekly online newsletter by going to http://www.gilbert.org/news and subscribing.
Two new services:
This news service has just announced its new search engine for all of the nonprofit news that they have ever referred to -- Nonportal (http://www.nonportal.org). Currently, Nonportal is in Phase 1, during which the basic platform is being tested, and relationships with content partners are being formed. Phase 2 will be a period of substantial expansion, with other search tools, news streams, and content. Phase 3 will add personalization features, so that users can make the most out of all the content.
A new company has been formed, called Social Ecology, Inc. (http://www.socialecology.com), to bridge the gap between nonprofits and technology. The company's first product will focus on nonprofit Intranets, the electronic communication approaches internal to organizations. To receive the latest updates, send an email to soceco@gilbert.org.
Online Fundraising
Not only large nonprofit organizations can benefit from fundraising on the net. Leslie Miller, USA Today, reports on what is happening in the world of online fundraising (http://www.usatoday.com/life/cyber/tech/ctf068.htm). Learn that not only can your organization benefit through the use of technology for fundraising, but can also connect with its donors via the internet much more efficiently and cost-conscious than by mail, for example.
Chevron Corporate Grants News
The URL for the Chevron Grants website in the Fall 1998 issue of The EE Advocate was incorrect. The correct address, http://www.chevron.com/community/index.html, will lead you to grant opportunities for environmental education programs (with specific emphasis on math and science education). Deadline: November 1, 1999.
