The New Mexico EE 2000 team steering committee held a planning retreat April 13-14. The steering committee consists of teachers in both public and private schools, state and federal agencies, corporations, and private organizations. The retreat focused on efforts for the next 2 years, and the steering committee's relationship to the EE Association of NM (EEANM). A lively debate yielded a consensus on 5 goals. From this the committee decided to initially focus on two leading goals: 1) Increase collaboration among EE efforts in New Mexico's diverse communities (e.g., urban/rural, tribal, community education, universities, business); and 2) Link the efforts of EE professionals with education reform advocates to better integrate EE into education initiatives. The education reform sub-group, chaired by Elaine Hampton of the University of NM has since compared the NAAEE Guidelines for Excellence in EE, to New Mexico's standards for science education. The group decided to provide examples of teaching EE in ways that meet the state's science standards to distributed with the standards to teachers and administrators. Eventually, connections between EE and other discipline standards will be made. Deb Thrall of Sandia Preparatory School will coordinate the diversity sub-group.
