The Environmental Education Advocate - Summer 1996

Informational sessions filled the bill on Wednesday and Thursday at the Leadership Clinic. Dr. Bora Simmons, NAAEE's president and professor at Northern Illinois University, led "Strategies for Incorporating EE Into The Curriculum." Marcia Wiley of the Washington Schools Model EE Links program led "Educational Restructuring and Model EE Schools." Gary Heath, Maryland's Department of Education EE Coordinator, led "Environmental Literacy Assessments."
"Networking: A Key Element to Achieving Our Goals" was led by Pam Landers of the Minnesota Green Print Council and Robert Olson of the Minnesota Office of Environmental Assistance. "Strategies to Increase Preservice EE Teacher Training" was led by Rosalyn McKeown-Ice of the University of Tennessee. And "Models of Professional EE Training--Inservice" was led by Carol Fialkowski of the Field Museum of Natural History and Mary Rice of Spring Valley Nature Sanctuary of Illinois.
Friday and Saturday's sessions focused on skills. "Constituency Building/Outreach" was led by Emilio N. Williams of the National Association of Service and Conservation Corps and Brenda Weiser of the National Association of Conservation Districts. "Organizational Development" was led by Dianne Russell of the Institute for Conservation Leadership who also led "Fundraising Plan Development." Stan Gruszynski, 3-term Assemblyman from Wisconsin led "Working With State Legislatures: The Do s and Don ts." And "Marketing/Promotional Strategies and Skills" was led by Brenda Anderson of the National Association of Conservation Districts with NEEAP's Tim Byers.
Recreation helped Clinic participants to get to know each other and relax. Informal gatherings centered on the Beartracks Lounge. Evenings saw the following: The New Hope Children s Theater performed "Save The Planet." Art Lies of Florence, Wisconsin gave a presentation on the art of brewing and tasting Wisconsin beer. McCain's Fruit of the Woods Wine Cellar, Inc. of Three Lakes, Wisconsin provided samples of native cranberry wines. Finally, Pinery Road of Star Lake, Wisconsin finished out the week with stories and songs about the Great North Woods.
Dr. Dennis Yockers of the Wisconsin Center for Environmental Education led nature hikes on Thursday and Friday and a group of birders, facilitated by NEEAP's Tim Byers, tallied 61 species for the week.
